DEC 10 - SLOW SPEEDS ON MCNICOLL....AGAIN

Click for full size
Am I the only one getting these terrible speeds right now? On the 25/1 plan. This has only been getting worse over the last couple months. Is Rogers finished with their work at Mcnicoll, or did they blow their maintenance date yet again?

I'm not seeing any issues.

No problems on McNicoll for me. If you're using a DOCSIS 2.0 modem, you should think about upgrading to a DOCSIS 3.0 modem to maintain consistent speeds.

Nice speeds there sMurf. I actually do have a 2.0 modem and was considering getting a 3.0. However, I appear to be having consistently poor speeds during peak hours. There hasn't been a time where it was normal. What main intersection do you live at? I'm at midland and danforth.

As usual, better speeds in the morning. I'm sure it'll slow down again.

And you probably always will with a 2.0 modem. There's only 38Mbps of bandwidth available per channel, so even if there's only 2 people sharing the same channel, there wouldn't be enough bandwidth for both users to max out a 24/1 line at the same time.

Rogers should have never upgraded Extreme customers (their own and TPIA) using 2.0 modems to 24Mbps. But they're idiots, so they did it anyways.

Are you suggesting that a 3.0 modem *may solve my problems. Could you explain the channels that you are referring to when it comes to 2.0 modems. I'm not too familiar.

Thanks for the help!

Yes, assuming the other channels in your area aren't as overloaded as the one you're currently on.

You can read a bit more about channels in this thread: »Question about Extreme Cable speeds

Very informative. Thanks sMurf. I just got off the phone with tech support who told me that an upgrade to docsis 3.0 would not help my issue as the Mcnicoll POI is experiencing congestion...as per every night.

Did I just get fed a line? Or is that the truth?

McNicoll is slightly congested at the moment, but I think I've only seen it on Sunday nights. This is my current speed:

A DOCSIS 3.0 modem WILL help you in your current situation, since your biggest problem right now is local.

Been typical like this on Sunday nights the past few weeks... Obviously saturated.

Can someone post their speeds thru Mcnicoll right now? I could not connect all night due to DHCP outages again...perhaps Rogers have performed the upgrades? I'm looking forward to going home and testing during peak times again! Fingers crossed....

Just got off the phone with Bell. Fibe 25 is 39.99 /mo for first 12 months, then 78 after 12.

They assured me 100% that there are no contracts for the first 12 months and no contracts after the 12 months. I think I've had it with Teksavvy and it's time to move over!

Mine right now, but I do notice McNicoll slowing down later at night. It's been iffy a bit lately.

I cant seem to get more than that at this time, and its barely 5pm... normally when no congestion i can easily get 50+ with speedboost.

It will no doubt get worse as the night goes on.

You should have got the $7.99 BHell fake kit Dell sold last weekend that give you 4 months of fake 25 if you want to go that route.
BHell, I got 1 just for insurance purpose with all this Rogers BS outage going on lately. $9/48.5 monthly cable fee works out to 5 days of outage.

Slowing down during peak hours. I am on Extreme (24/1). I always wonder what it takes to bring us down to below 5 Mbps speeds because I feel like it won't take much.

I guess we'll get a stop sell if we see 1meg...

This shouldnt even be an issue as an upgrade was supposed to be done late november. Now we get squat and will have to wait till who knows in the new year.
