Attainable line speed?

Edit - sorry guys, this belongs somewhere else.

Hi All

This is probably too basic a question for the forum, but I'm taking a closer look at my DSL and trying to learn a little more about how it all works. I have a DM111P modem, running the line straight to it (no router) and I've been "promised" a 12mbps upgrade from Century Link.

I'm getting good service at 1.5mbps, or at least it's consistent, and I'm reading all kinds of horror stories about attempts to upgrade. I run my business out of my house, I'm sort of out in the boonies, and I need consistency far more than on/off 5 times a day at faster speeds.

So, my current line speed is 1.536mbps and the attainable line speed is reading 10.688. My question is how is that 10.688 number determined? Is the modem able to ascertain that on its own? The noise margin is 33.db and attenuation is 24db if that helps any. From what I've read, those numbers aren't too bad, but will it support 12mbps?

Thanks,
Allan
