Xbox 360 problems

I gave my xbox to my grandson. He plays it a lot. Today my daughter called and said it was not working. The 3 lights around the power light are red. The rest are green. The only place she can find to send it wants a flat $99 to fix it, with only a 3 month warranty. A new system is $199 (I think) I know nothing of gaming, can any one here give us any advice? I appreciate it and thanks.

The 3 lights means he's got the red ring of death. Microsoft will fix it. $100 and I think you get a 1 year warranty. Yes a new one is $200. It doesn't come with a HDD just so you know. And if you've got the old style 360 you can't swap out HDD.

What model is you XBOX?

Did it have a hard drive?

How old is your grandson? Make sure whether you get a new one or fix the old one that he keeps the xbox off of carpeting and in a place where it can get plenty of air circulation.

It has a hard drive. My grandson is 9 and plays for 4-5 hrs a week. I can not get the model number right now. In your opinion, is she beter off getting it fixed for 100 or getting a new one for 200? Did they fix this problem with the newer models?? Thanks.

Newer models don't suffer from this problem. You still need to make sure it's not on carpet or anything like that and has plenty of air ciculation.

As I said the $200 models only have 4 GB of storage and no HDD. You're old HDD won't work. If he only uses storage for game saves then 4 GB should be fine.

if you go the XBOX website and put in your model number and decribe your problem they'll tell you how much it will cost to fix. Only you decide if it's worth the money or not. I will say it may take a few weeks ot get it back especially at this time of year.

I think Microsoft's out-of-warranty repair is also $99, with a 90 day warranty for the repaired unit. They're the only place I'd send a broken Xbox to be repaired.

But in your situation I'd probably buy a new unit. Best Buy has a deal right now and you'll probably see similar deals for the holidays: »www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp···00050000

And I'm pretty sure you could still use your old Hard Drive with the new Slim, but it would involve removing the case that the Hard Drive uses to attach to the Xbox. Then you slide it in the back of the new Slim unit.

Look at the back. When was it manufactured? If it is more than 3 years old your out of luck for warranty but the RROD is 3 years warranty. If it is out of warranty I would get a new slim. Even if they repair it it will more than likely fail again. I have had 4 replaced so far all under warranty. 3 RROD's and 1 E74.

To conclude, my daughter decided to get a new XBOX rather than fix the old one. The new ones have some feature I understand the old one did not. I appreciate all the advice, and wanted to let all who advised what happened. Thanks.

Just so you know, if the unit will power on and operate for at least 5 minutes, you can trade it at gamestop and get $30 extra for trade, so I think about 100 toward the new one. I had one about 4 months ago that started acting up, they plugged it in and it powered up and loaded a game. Played it for 2-3 minutes and gave me trade. I got out with a $299 new unit for $175. YMMV.
