Who Knows What Youhavedownloaded.com?

»krebsonsecurity.com/2011/12/who-···ded-com/

quote:
It tracks and records information that users share when they download and upload files on public peer-to-peer file-trading networks. But the free service does have the potential to make people think twice about downloading pirated movies, games and music, because it shows how easily this information can be discovered and archived.

So far, youhavedownloaded.com has recorded more than 50 million unique Internet addresses belonging to file-sharing users. The site is searchable by file name and by Internet address. When you visit, it automatically checks and lets you know if your Internet address is in the database.

Interesting and Dangerous at the same time. I can't see this ending well. Raises privacy concerns as well. None of this filesharing would be happening if they would just lower prices, but they won't.

Finally, facts demonstrated in a way that may convince some diehard believers how useless their IP blocks are. I see many anxious moments ahead for those people identified and waiting for an outcome.

Interesting. It says my corporate IP downloaded an Xvid of The Twilight Saga Breaking Dawn sometime in Nov. 2011.

I wonder who it was. I know it wasn't me, since I don't torrent at all--never have. And there's no way I'd download THAT of all things. Let alone, at work!

Hmmmm, Not impressed. 1st they have this greeting treating everyone as a pirate:

quote:
Hi Pirate IP x.x.x.x! We got you! (In our database). You like torrents, don’t you? At least someone in your house does. It looks like you are from United States, somewhere around Florida. According to our records, you have downloaded a couple of files. Below is a table with examples. You can click on any filename to get more details. Of course, we are sure that you didn’t violate any laws of United States and downloaded only legal stuff, right?
Then they show me all the horrors of what I have downloaded...

one file...

100 Chinese top secret recipes {MrTPB} (4.91 MB) Dec, 2011

Oh, busted, they got me. I was trying to get my fix of Kung Pao Chicken, Mongolian Beef & Spring Rolls!!! Oh the horror!

This place has thousands of people but only six lawyers and none of the attorneys are shimmery or goth. So I assume it wasn't one of us.

Hi. We have no records on you.
This means you are using a private torrent tracker [NOPE] or, of course, you may not be a torrent user at all[YEP]! It happens. Please, entertain yourself. Feel free to see what other people have downloaded. The search box is on the top. If you have any friends who use torrents, use it to scare them off. We also have a widget that you can install in your website, blog or Facebook page. Or you can just send them a link to this site. They will see a table similar to what you see below. The only difference — they will see their downloads

Usenet ftw.

What’s the matter? You’re brave enough to steal music, movies and programs but only because you thought you weren’t going to get caught? Well whoever told you that was completely wrong and now your information has gone public. Are you afraid of media companies finding out that you’re a pirate or are you afraid of your friends finding out exactly what you’ve been downloading? Whatever your reason may be, the internet is no place for secrets. Even if you use every precaution in the book, there’s always a chance that someone like us will figure out what you’ve been up to. Because, the reality is, if man made it...man will get around it...and man will figure out how to exploit it. It’s just human nature.

Anyway, like we said before, luck is on your side today because we’re actually nicer than we let on. I never said we wouldn’t bust your chops about it, but at least we’re offering you a chance to redeem yourself — The details can be found after logging in to your Facebook account.

Temporarily disabled due problems with Facebook.

Them dudes is the funny. Why would I link them to my facebook account that seems dumb.

I just had a look at this. I am in a work camp up north, so I tether my cell phone.

Apparently my cell phone IP address does a lot of torrenting... inculding big files.

Now I am going to assume that Telus doesn't share IP addresses between their cell phone data systems and their at home internet services....

So who the hell can afford to download files like that off of their data plans in Canada? lol

I wasn't on this list, then I rebooted my cable modem, ended up with a new IP address, and now I'm a pirate. If only they knew what I'd grabbed with my old IP. The fact that it wasn't listed shows how incompetent this site, and it's owners, really are.

Pretty stupid website, and not to be taken seriously by any private citizen with an IP that changes at random.

But let them have their 15 minutes of fame. I'm sure anon will be along shortly to shut them down....

The other scary thing about this site (beyond the obvious) is that so many people use dymanic ip addresses, so your ip address could show something you nver downloaded. another good reason to go usenet, more privacy.
