 | [HN9000] Having huge drops in the evening. During the day I have no problem with surfing the net, or even watching a video now and then or downloading files. Once around 7pm rolls around; forget about watching videos, forget downloading, and dont even try to game. I have the 2nd tier of service which is i believe 1.5mbs. Is there a reason for this can someone possibly help me out here |

Re: [HN9000] Having huge drops in the evening. I suspect we'll see more of this as people get used to the rollover bandwidth. I'd suggest running the HN speed and response tests at random times to document your slowdowns. That way HN will believe you. They have some options to deal with congestion if enough people from the same location are complaining. |
|
 | I've been having severe slowdown in the evenings lately, too. It's a little heartening to hear that complaining might actually help, since I'd kind of just resigned to giving up on the internet from 5 to 8 PM.
I'm wondering what a "good" range for Hughesnet's speed test should look like, though. I'd normally consider 716 Kb down and 110 Kb up to be fine (at least, download wise); but my connection is basically unusable for anything except light web browsing during peak hours, and these are the numbers Hughesnet's speed test gives me. |

| reply to evilla You're not alone in this, as fleece, Miss Match, and myself will tell you. There's a consistent drop in service during the evening and has been for some time now. But while this has always been around, it's never affected web browsing until now. It's pretty irritating when you're trying to browse pictures or read web comics and the connection makes images load at dial-up speeds. And as you said, playing games is even more impossible than that! Ah, such is the case when people realize they have much more bandwidth to play with and try to use the overflow all at once... all at the same time. -- ISP: HughesNet Satellite Internet Modem Model: HN9000 Service Plan: Grandfathered ProPlus -- 425 MB + 100 MB/day, 1050 MB total, 1.6 Mbps DL; 250 Kbps UL) |

 | Yeah I have basically just decided to give up going online at around 5-8pm its just not worth my time. I gave trying to play games on it as well. in the morning tis good, but after that forget about it. It is just hard for me because I need this for school work and its killing me when i try to post up my assignments. |

I'm going back to dial up!!!!!! |

I've considered dial up, but my speeds are good in the morning and sometimes I get lucky in the 5 - 11 pileup. These speeds really are unacceptable, though. |

| like i posted in the other thread, using speed test sites is going to give you inaccurate results due to the data compression hughesnet uses on their network. not saying that you aren't getting slow speeds because it sounds like you are but just thought i would point that out |

modman join:2012-01-22 Gallant, AL | reply to evilla I guess it taking over a hour to download a 5 meg file is inaccurate too :P |

 | reply to evilla Our experience in the last 6 months or so that our download experience is around 50 to 70k download in other words dialup. Also the executive customer service says you have to use their bandwidth test and not use speedtest.net which they try to say is not relevant for a satellite provider. Well how do you explain an error message from Pandora that says your bandwidth is lower than 68k so your music will be interrupted please check with your provider. We check and they say not true the hughesnet speed tes is accurate claiming 1.5Mbps which is wrong.... so I think it is time for a report to Atty General office in Maryland |
|
 | reply to Miss Match That is just what we get(40k down 100k up) and the bozo's at Hughesnet don't recognize speedtest.net. That is how they get around the fact that they aren't providing the service we're paying for!! It is outrageous 40k download for $60 a month ridiculous!! I am starting formal complaints to Better Business and Atty General's office |

 | reply to chances14 That is a bunch of crap!! the latency is explained with the ping test!! This is the way Hughesnet gets around their horrible service: BY NOT RECOGNIZING SPEEDTEST.NET totally bogus!!! why was it a year ago or so speedtest and their test were almost the same? Now when Pandora shuts down saying our bandwidth has sunk below 68k and speedtest tells us it is 60k down but when we check the hughesnet site it says we're at 2Mbps total fraud!! Why aren't the songs on pandora playing then??? don't you think they would play at 2Mbps give me a break!!! |

the only true accurate way to measure your speed is to download a file from a dedicated server and time it that way |

I am starting formal complaints to Better Business and Atty General's office Personally if I was in your shoes I would call the customer support every single day until it is fixed. When you start costing them money in customer support hours they will escalate you to somebody who can actually get something done. Also there may be some members in here that can get you into contact with a higher level tech support.(Unfortunately I am not one of them )
Another option is just don't let them off the phone until they escalate you. Don't accept their excuses and keep on insisting. When you sigh and hang up they forget about you and move to the next caller. The best way to get somewhere with tech support is not necessarily being rude, but persistent. They don't have time to talk to you all day, so they are going to do whatever it takes to get you off the phone or to stop calling. -- Windows 7 Pro 64-Bit / Core i5 - 760 / GTX 460 1GB SLI / 8GB DDR3 RAM / Vertex 2 120GB SSD |

 | reply to evilla When downloads slow to a crawl during primetime, try disabling your turbopage to see if you get a huge improvement.
Simply killing my turbopage when a downloads are running as low as 40 kbps will boost it to 600-800 kbps. This makes the difference in actually being able to watch a utube video vs.coming back an hour later to view a replay. |

 | reply to Sircolby45 We're going to the Atty General office and report them and file that they are committing fraud. they have told us that they are not going to charge us until it's fixed. That is one good thing! We are talking to Maryland Hqt since India just tells you it's your computer and hangs up. But I have been in this industry a while and the idea that you don't recognize the pandora error message or speedtest.net then it's fraud. their test said 1.8Mbps now if we were getting that would I be on the phone calling them??? tonight we're getting 20Kbps down and 112Kbps up is that service we should pay for? Pandora won't even launch |
|
 | reply to Crazyhorse What do you mean turbo page?? |

 | reply to Sircolby45 We have talked to the executive customer support in maryland we don't call the standard anymore. And we are calling the bozos everyday!! all they say is we're looking into it.. we had an authorized tech out at hughesnet expense and their tests were perfect new 9000 modem new fittings and da da 20k down 112 up great service isn't it?? their sla is 300k down and i think 75k up and we aren't even close to that and we're holding them to it!! |
