1 edit | [Internet] No internet after 2wire modem upgraded by Bell remote I'm trying to track down a strange issue, that I think has been caused by a remote upgrade of the 2wire modem's software sometime last night after I went to bed.
I'm located in Mississauga.
This morning when I attempted to access the internet via wireless connection, I discovered that I had no connectivity.
I fired up the computer that the 2wire modem is hooked up to and discovered that the status page had changed and that in fact the entire software control panel for the 2wire had been redesigned (not for the better IMO, but that's neither here nor there at this point)
As of 9AM when I left for work, I have no connectivity, despite numerous resets of the modem and connecting the modem directly to the PC in question (It is normally connected via ethernet to a Dlink 655 router)
The lights on the modem are green that are supposed to be (Ethernet/DSL/Internet) and the internet light does flash, which to me indicates some level of activity.
During my tests, when I was using both Fx 8.01 and IE 9 64 bit, I was also at certain point unable to even reach the modem, including when it was directly connected to the PC.
Has anyone else run into this?

| Re: [Internet] No internet after 2wire modem upgraded by Bell re Bell can indeed remotely update your firmware. In order to get everything working again, there's two options: 1) Call Bell and explain the story, probably exchange modems, praying this scenario won't repeat itself. 2) Just look online for regular firmware, load that into your modem, release all the possibilities of the 2Wire and be safe from any future remote updates. Bell won't like this option, and it's officially not allowed if it's a rental, but they can always load their own firmware again when you send it back. |

| Well, considering that they have upgraded the 2wire's software remotely in the past without issue, I'm rather puzzled that this one has apparently "bricked" the modem
As to futzing around with the firmware, I'd honestly rather buy my own modem and install that. If it is the modem, then I know the 2wire has been bricked for sure by Bell versus just the line being screwed up. Frankly it would be nice to have a modem where I can actually see what's going on "under the hood" if I want to.

| I didn't think to check whether this "upgrade" blew away my already entered pppoe username/PW, but will check that tonight when I get home.
If it did this has to be the dumbest upgrade I've ever seen, because if there was even a chance of that happening after such, Bell should have forewarned its customers in an email of such a thing possibly happening.

The bell 2wires ship with a factory preset pppoe username and password and it may have reverted to that during the upgrade |

| reply to NefCanuck Okay new information and I'm even more convinced that a software upgrade is at the root of this issue.
When I got home last night, still no internet, tried a reset, no joy but now when I call Bell and input the service #, a recording comes on that says (quoting from memory)
"Bell HSE users in your exchange (905-566-XXXX) are experiencing temporary internet problems, we apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your understanding"
No ETA for repairs and it has now been a day and a half of no service

Wo1f join:2007-10-02 Montreal, QC | reply to NefCanuck I was seemingly hit with the same modem upgrade as you have a couple nights ago. I was actually waiting to see if more cases would come forward. In my case, my wired LAN was not affected, hence my patient approach. But, the WI-FII is non-functional at this point. It seems to be related to an authentication failure.
All config. info checks out as it should, just can't connect anymore... to my youngest daughter's complete dismay I might add. So she's now tethered and I at least have some rest from the constant nagging to get it fixed.
Not looking forward to dealing with Bell as this is something I've managed to avoid for many years now. So if you have further information with your dealings with Bell that may help me, I would be obliged.
Thanks. |

| Hrm, did you ever try calling in to 310-SURF just to see what, if any "special message" came up after you punched in your phone #?
I have posted in the Sympatico Direct forum about my issue but at this point I'm wondering if it wouldn't be just as easy to buy a new ADSL modem and see what happens when I hook the sucker up?
If it worked, then it would be absolute proof that the 2Wire is now a brick thanks to that "upgrade" IMO.

On many modern devices, the firmware periodically toggles a LED simply to indicate that the CPU/firmware is not crashed, it is in no way representative of any activity.
Personally, I liked asynchronous activity-based blinks better... but everyone appears to be jumping on the "heartbeat" blinking bandwagon which I personally find useless/annoying. |

What you say is quite true, in fact the light blinking may simply be the Bel modem equivalent of the "idiot lights" in your cars dashboard that fire up once when the car is started to confirm that they work (and pray that they never fire up again while you are driving)
But on the other hand it could also be signifying that the Bell CO end of things is trying to communicate with the modem but if the modem is now bricked all that will ever happen is that the light will blink.

 2Wire v.6.1.5.74 |
I received the update as well.
No problems so far (although I don't use it's WiFi, so it's disabled). DHCP was re-enabled so I had to disable it again as per my preference - I use another router for that.
The only problem I've got is figuring how to re-create a working 'Reconnect' script for JDownloader... |

| Not really no, at least nothing that my "nerd dyno" can feel when doing uploads and nothing substantial when using actual measuring tools.
I think if I want a real speed upgrade for uploads I may just have to bite the bullet, but I need to see what my data use is like before I agree to any caps.

| reply to NefCanuck I forgot about the profile settings and most customers are set for 800k upload...it would take someone, who was curious enough, to post in the "direct" forum asking for his or her profile to be changed to the 1 meg upload setting to see if there indeed was an improvement in speed due to the new firmware...I am on Fibe TV so my upload profile is around 1.5 meg and I do not have the same modem so I cannot ask...I certainly am curious. -- My Canada includes Quebec. Disclaimer: If I express an opinion, it is my own opinion, not that of Bell or its related companies. |

| I haven't noticed any change regarding upload speed either - still testing at 0.75Mb (Fibe16):

I've posted to the Bell Direct forum...we'll see.
Also, the internal pages have changed as well on the new firmware - the line stats page on the older firmware no longer works I can't even look up any of the sync info...at least not until a new stats page is found... |
