RAM gaming

if I get 2 sets of this ram total of 8GB with heatsinks is this a pretty solid setup for gaming? My ASUS MB can only handle 8GB total so I thought Id max it out. Didnt know if anyone had any experience with this brand/type or RAM or not? Thanks for the help.

As long as you have enough RAM to meet the minimum requirements of the game. I find the cheapest possible because it makes little impact on performance.

CPU and graphics card matters alot more performance wise.

We need to know the model in order to tell you the best memory for it.

Download CPU-Z so you can get that info easier.

You can go there and use their scanner. It will tell you exactly what type of RAM you need. As far as what brand G.Skill and Corsair seem to be the most popular.

for gaming, 8GB is more than plenty. For gaming purposes you will never even use 4GB. So don't sweat it.

Amount of ram used allllll depends on what the person is doing with the pc, I can hit 6 easy, with only 1 game open...

Also do not forget the vid card steal ram, prefetch can steal ram (makes map loading SO much faster) etc etc... and with the prices...

Ya don't panic but... maxing out or going up aint a bad plan...

I forgot what was it 256k should be enough ram forever? IBM had a what a like 2mb hdd and a 5mb hdd but did not market it because they did not know how to sell extra storage? rofl...

well then you are doing a LOT more than just gaming. This person specifically said "gaming" not video editing or cad rendering. For gaming you will not use even 4GB for years to come yet.

depends

@optonline.net

um, e-mail, IE, steam, av, game...

No cad, no vid work...

And you still left out the part of prefetch... (if i go into resource monitor I have 656 free, 9.2 standby and 6.3 inuse)
Left out vid card load up stuff into system ram.

So ya right now, only game and my normal background programs open...

Also the op just asked if it was a good setup for gaming, said NOTHING about the games, the usage of the pc... etc... nothing about the system specs.. etc etc etc... Me omfg to game... i HAD to get away from 2 gigs... and then I got away from 8 since prices were so cheap...

and my vid encoding is all cpu and i do no real cad rendering the ram I have no was for game reasons... while likely more intense than most still game reasons...

...only if you're on a shared memory graphics chipset (i.e. mobile chipset), in which case you shouldn't be playing 3D games anyway.

Nope, vid card will load up stuff into ram it needs...

Check, my 1280mb vid card says it has 4 gigs of ram...

Texture memory, not just onboard the card... so yes a vid card can spill into system ram.

As far as I understand if you have spare ram, the vid card will load stuff it may need into ram (textures)... I wish I could find the thing where I saw that and they tested it...

Edit: as far as effect on fps.. donno...

It can use RAM but it doesn't steal RAM as it doesn't reserve RAM so that it can't be used by programs. Besides that's not a function of the graphics card but of DirectX.

Well nothing can steal ram as everything is allowed to use it... you know what I mean, the GPU can use memory, unless I guess you aint playing a dx game...

Really trying to stay simple, GPU can steal system ram to hold textures in, having more ram can help you as it gives more room for textures, RAM faster than HDD...

It is not ONLY onboard cards that can use system ram but GPU's as well...

Again the performance difference... eh... don't remember, however I think it showed one.

It's not the GPU using the RAM, it's the specific DirectX driver.

Again, a function of the driver, NOT the GPU, and it doesn't STEAL RAM, it USES it. That's like saying "Office steals your RAM". It makes no sense.

Integrated graphics (very different from on-board) in mobile chipsets DO ACTUALLY STEAL some RAM as they do not have their own memory so they reserve a specific (and adjustable) range of memory addresses that cannot be used by anything else. The OS doesn't even see that memory range as part of the RAM.

THAT is stealing memory, and it has nothing to do with the OP's situation.

Cool story, the whole start was not even a reply to you but someone saying a game will never use over 4gigs, if my vid card (show me a game not using dx) can have 4 gigs of memory usable (using 3 from RAM) and the game uses 1 gig... well I hit 4 gigs did I not?

the ops question is answered with a simple "yes", we went past that long ago.

8 gigs is solid for a gaming setup.

Now let's just leave it be omg, having MORE ram is good... and a game can eat up ram via textures being loaded into system ram.

Not too sure why this is a huge deal.

You have yet to tell me no, more ram is not a good idea because the card driver wtfever can use it...

Video card memory is addressed and counted alongside system memory. It's additive, so even with 4 gig installed with a 32 bit OS and 2 gig of separate memory on the video card, you'll probably only see 1.5 to 2 gig available to the OS (depending on the OS)

This is why people with a large amount of memory on their video cards should opt for a 64 bit operating system . . .the limit is much higher on a 64 bit OS.
