 | No DSL at my address anymore? I went to the Verizon website, typed in my address and a bunch of Fios bundles came up. I thought this was odd, since I know we don't have Fios...I went to the Standard bundles and was shocked when it said "sorry, HSI isn't available at your address". I figured it was just messed up and cleared IE out and typed my info back in..Nope, still not available!? What's going on? I checked about a month ago, and it was available, plus I live in a main area in the city...I've seen a couple Verizon trucks on my street, is it possible they messed something up? Is Fios coming? Or is the grid full or something?
NOTE: This is funny, I'm on free internet from a restaurant, (not my own internet) and it says @verizon.net. But I can't get it? |

| I would check to see if FiOS is actually available by checking with neighbors or perhaps those Verizon techs you've seen recently. It was announced several months ago that Verizon is looking to stop selling DSL services if FiOS is available. According to the Verizon website, you seem to have FiOS available if bundles are coming up.
You could also try pestering the Phone Reps to see if you can do anything to get DSL, but in all honesty if FiOS is available, I would suggest trying to shoot for that. |

It's also possible the site is having a bad day, or simply set up to push FiOS where it is available somewhere in the vicinity.
A few months ago I had to re-do my bundle (they changed the price to the unbundled when the agreement expired, even though it said it still was the bundle on the bill, and billing refused to change it). Anyway, the site was only offering me FiOS options because it is available already in parts of DC...but I know that it isn't scheduled to be rolled out in my neighborhood until somewhere between late 2012 and 2014. (And, I'm in a large apartment building so who knows when service will actually become available at my address.) I had to choose a FiOS bundle and after it realized it wasn't actually available at my address it then offered DSL bundles as the consolation prize.
And, yes, the OP should absolutely take FiOS if it's available. -- "Dance like the photo isn't being tagged; love like you've never been unfriended; and tweet like nobody is following." |

 | reply to F1aReD FWIW i am in a FiOS market area. Up until about 8 months ago or so the Walmart was still selling new Verizon DSL modems and Modem/router combos for DSL. They then vanished from the store . Most folks calling to order phone , internet and TV do not know or care if the outside wire (drop) coming off the pole is copper or fiber optic cable. The installer will simply install FiOS in FiOS market areas from here forward. Those like me still on DSL are grandfathered until such time Verizon mandates FiOS . One possible loophole in a FiOS market is to TRY and order copper POTS first and see if they will install a copper drop / or turn on copper POTS if a copper drop already exists. If you can get the POTS on then add DSL . However if you have a newer home and you don't mind going through a FiOS install most folks will just go with that. |

 | reply to F1aReD I've run into this twice now myself for retired family members ... and this thread popped up as a top result in my query (after a bunch of vz site links).
Two years ago, approx, one family member had regular phone service and could not get the $20/mo DSL Lite that otherwise was available. VZ mandated FIOS to the tune of $50/mo and up. Also seems they have a local monopoly and other DSL services through other nationwide providers were not possible.
Currently we are trying to move a family member who has regular phone service & DSL Lite to a house two streets over ... same thing. VZ mandates that the service is FIOS.
The issues I have with that is primarily that it is a HUGE up-sell that doubles the bill. I understand they put the newer infrastructure in, but they're not offering a value service at a value rate to retirees who are on fixed income and just want local calling and the basic 3/1 DSL.
The copper service is still there and works ...
Anyhow, I wonder if it is/was legal for VZ to mandate FIOS? Or if there is still loophole (which they of course won't tell you about) that you can keep regular copper phone line. Which coincidentally keeps working when power goes out. Unlike the cable & fios phone system. |

| Check with your local consumer regulatory agency whether there are requirements for an ILEC to provide discounted service to seniors. That might force them to provide service on copper or match the price for FiOS. -- "Dance like the photo isn't being tagged; love like you've never been unfriended; and tweet like nobody is following." |
