The newer phones such as the 9971 and the Cius are SIP only and require a fairly recent version of Cisco Unified Communications Manager. |

I've worked with Cisco UC since version 3.X of the CallManager and it's been evolving very fast... I'm still surprised to see large companies and educational institutions still using old PBX phone systems from the early 1990's... yes the Cisco UC solution is not cheap (A 300 phone system will cost about $250,000 with services) but the features and the ROI that it offers is fantastic.
I am not familiar with other manufacturers systems (I guess I should be?) such as NEC, Avaya, ShoreTel, etc... but I assume they offer products that are similar, at a better price. |

We run a large UCM cluster at work (several thousand extentions...) I've got a softphone assigned to me, for my remote desk, but don't have the software, and am stuck in a mobius loop with IT... I requested the software be installed, they said it already was, I say "it's not", they say "OK, well launch the program, and tell me what it says". I say "I can't launch a program that I don't have" - so they say "OK, well it says here it's installed" - AAARRGGGHHH!!!!
Oh, and the 7940's are bulletproof - we have thousands of them... |

OxygenTimes Square can't shine as brightPremium join:2001-12-04 Nesconset, NY | Did you want 7.03 in particular or just the latest one? You'll obviously need enough DLU's on the UCM to provision this... |
|
LazManPremium join:2003-03-26 canada | If you've got it, 7.03, please... and we do have more then enough licenses - it's not the "phone" guys that are my issue, it's the computer guys... |

The 7906/7911 phones provide a higher resolution display than the 7905/7912 phones, and are similar in operation. |

 | reply to Oxygen I just got to see a CTS 1300 installed last week that thing was amazing. The Cisco Telepresence is very neat. Working on my CCNP right now then I'm going back to work up the Voice line - CCNA Voice, CCNP Voice. |

fcislerPremium join:2004-06-14 Riverhead, NY | reply to Oxygen WOW...They are really going SIP only on the newer phones - is that across the board or just these? How does Cisco handle BLA/SLA with those phones and SIP? Asterisk apparently does SLA...but it's a PITA and haven't had much of a chance to get it to work.
How is the SIP firmware on these units? Compared to the SCCP on something like a 7940 the SIP feels "empty", IE: I cannot edit the lower buttons or use the line buttons for anything but a line. Do the newer devices allow a bit more customization for SIP? Any funky "Cisco only" SIP extensions/modifications?
Currently using P003-08-8-00 (8.8) on 7940/7960 (on recommendation) as they run rock solid. Any newer versions add any features or are they worth it? |
