| Can't Connect to Tower Have an iSpot that's just 1 day out of warranty and Clear tells me I'm out of luck.
The unit will power up. My iPod can connect to the iSpot web admin. It just won't connect to the tower (blinking red LED indicating no signal). I've taken it across town near other towers with the same result.
I did a reset to defaults. Still no tower connection.
Folks, if I'm going to spend $50/mo. on a hotspot, it will NOT be with Clear and their lousy spotty coverage. Half the local area is outside their service. Verizon offers 4G for $50 and their coverage is everywhere. No wonder Clear is going bankrupt.
The one thing that caught my eye in the log is "Subscription 'activated' is FALSE". But trying to communicate intelligently with Clear Support-- the people I've spoken with are in the Phillipines, not the U.S.-- is impossible. The offshore people are TOTALLY POWERLESS to do anything but apologize. They offer NO solutions. Just apologies.
Anyone else seen this, or does it really sound like a broken device? Clear doesn't sell the iSpot anymore and are totally unwilling to help me get a replacement. Their only option is to buy a new device and upgrade to a current package-- which is double ($50) the price. No other solutions offered.

2 edits | That's what I thought when I first checked eBay. Then I noticed the listings are for USB cables and chargers, not the iSpot itself.
UPDATE: A new eBay listing for an iSpot popped up, but it's actually not an iSpot. Everywhere in the posting it says iSpot but if you read the bottom of the description it's one of the black Clear Spot devices. Totally different. eBay seller is an idiot for listing it that way. | | | You are correct, I misread the ads. The iSpots were sold for $20 by Clear last December to close them out. I'm surprised there aren't any for sale if no one liked them. I have one that works great but it cost more than $20 when I bought it. | | rebus9 join:2002-03-26 Tampa Bay Reviews:

| I liked my iSpot. I liked the price and the unlimited usage. Even though I never hit 1 GB a month, it was peace of mind knowing I didn't have to worry about it if I felt like streaming Netflix while I waited for my wife to shop.
If the device hadn't died, I would have probably stayed a Clear customer for a very long time.
My only real complaint was the coverage area. "Most" of the area near home is covered, but places 5 or 10 miles from here that I regularly go have no signal. There is also no signal in the cities where we regularly visit family.
Yesterday I bought a T-Mobile prepaid mobile hotspot. It's $30/month capped at 1 GB. $50/month gets you 3 GB. Since I don't use a full 1 GB per month, that will work OK for me. Price is similar to the iSpot with no contract. But now I'm paranoid about bandwidth usage.
Coverage area is... well.... everywhere I want to go, in-state and out of state. So that's a plus.
If I can find a used iSpot before the end of the week, I might still keep my Clear service for streaming Netflix or sending lots of pics/vids of a party or vacation to family. | |
