| Saab reaches the end of the road Thanks in no small part to GM, both for tainting the brand with its shoddy Detroit ways and now for refusing to grant licensing to potential competition, Saab is likely no more.
The NY Times has an interesting retrospective on the brand:

 | GM is afraid of licensing the Chinese with it's technology. That's a joke, the Chinese will reverse engineer it and build it anyway. |
|
 | The only reason you can get a decent car from the Big Three (2.5?) now is because of foreign competition.
More short-sighted, protectionist stupidity and more evidence why GM should not have been shored up with tax money. |

|
 | No, that was one of Saab's endearing features long before GM took over. |

Saab was a terrible business decision to have ever been bought in the first place. -- [65 Arcanist]Filan(High Elf) Zone: Broadband Reports |

 Saab Sonett III | 1973 advertisement |
My father sold Saabs in NJ circa 1970. I remember taking a train up to New Haven to pick up the newly-released Saab Sonnet III and drive it back to NJ.
Saabs were built pretty well back then. My father was a big guy, and he would demonstrate to customers that he could sit on top of the side window frame with the door open, and not damage the car.
They also had a heater that could defrost the Arctic. |

JBear join:2005-02-24 canada | reply to No_Strings Sportscar isn't reliant on horsepower or engine size, though being a Rear Wheel Drive helps. The Mazda Miata with it's whole 1.6L engine when it came out is touted as one the best sportscars ever. |

KearnstdElf WizardPremium join:2002-01-22 Mullica Hill, NJ | reply to No_Strings I have a feeling if GM didnt borg Saab all those years ago that Saab would have been dead already. That said it was a terrible decision for GM which already had sagging brands when they took over Saab which added to their collection another sagging brand with less market than Olds had. -- [65 Arcanist]Filan(High Elf) Zone: Broadband Reports |
