Does anyone have a Core 2 Duo E8500 stepping C0 that they'd be willing to trade for a E8500 stepping E0?
I bought the E8500 (E0) to upgrade a 3.5+ year-old Dell Vostro 400 and it turns out that the BIOS only fully supports the C0 stepping (and there isn't a more recent BIOS update available).
Thanks! -- Mike |

What motherboard make and model and version was it that won't support the E0 stepping?. |

What motherboard make and model and version was it that won't support the E0 stepping?. Good morning,
I don't have a picture -- the processor is installed and I didn't have a reason to take a picture of it pre-install. It's a SLB9K E8500 that I have the original box (and un-used stock HSF) for. Here's a CPU-Z screenshot I just took which shows it's a E0 "revision" E8500.
The system is a Dell Vostro 400, with a "G33M03" motherboard and BIOS 1.0.15 (release date 7/15/2008), which is the most recent BIOS shown on the Dell Support website for the Vostro 400.
The system works fine except the motherboard no longer regulates the CPU fan and chassis fan, and doesn't correctly report the motherboard temperature. I've been doing a bunch of searching on the Dell support forums and elsewhere, and found indications that others have had the same type of issue if they used a higher stepping CPU than their motherboard/BIOS was 'certified' for by Dell, and the only certified stepping of the E8500 for this system board is C0. -- Mike |

| Okay, two things.
1) Not reporting the correct core temps for one or both cores is a common flaw in the core 2 processors. Intel may have fixed it now, but it was not unusual early on if I remember correct. Said to have been caused by a stuck temp sensor on or in the processor die.
2) I have an E8400 CO equivalent (E3110) which is the Xeon version that also has one stuck temp sensor. The other sensor reads the correct core temps so I simply go by that. If you'd like to trade your E8500 for my E3110 CO stepping we can do that deal.
Let me know, okay? |

The core temps seem to be fine; it's a motherboard temp which is incorrect since installing the E8500.
Thanks for the offer. Though I've read that the E3110 is essentially identical to the E8400, given the trouble I've already experienced with this upgrade I don't feel comfortable trying a non-certified processor. -- Mike |
