Website Viewing

I manage my network at work, we use a Westell 7500 4 port wireless router. I am wondering if I can see what websites are being viewed over that network. I have a suspected frequent porn viewer and I need to deal with this post-haste!
Thank you.

Log into the Router admin page and check the logs. If you want a more robust and full options, here are two options that I use:

The freeware program Wallwatcher is compatible with your router as well. While the author has stopped work on the project the software itself is fully functional and has a proven track record.

You can find it at: »wallwatcher.com/

After a minor configuration change to the Westell router (basically telling it where to forward a copy of the log entries) the log entries can be viewed and or sorted on the PC of your choice somewhere on your network.

if this is for work is there any chance at some kind of firewall/proxy as well? because in a work place if some guy is viewing porn and female coworker sees it. in this day in age it can set the owner of the company up for the business end of a lawsuit filed under harassment I think.

I use OPENDNS DNS servers (Free) to block porn at home. Suggest that is a viable approach.

If its not affecting others and his job performance is acceptable then I would just say who cares.

No way somebody can have reasonable job performance if he is constantly looking at porn. Taking a peek every now and then is another thing.

My last office basically took this stance and I was cool with it, but I'm a pretty relax guy.

Its not for me to care.

The owner of the company sets his policies. He's a hippie from Austria / Germany and couldn't care less about an employee looking at boobies as long as nobody else sees it and job performance is acceptable. ( The European worldview is such a refreshing thing....I miss my old boss )

IT people in general are way too over zealous. I worked in an IT department at a State University and the policies got so ridiculous faculty started buying personal internet connections and completely unplugging from school network.

When the chancellor got word of this he immediately made the IT staff unfiltered and unblock 90% of what they had been doing with my full support. I had been telling my boss this for 2 years and he said I was fucking crazy. Guess who got the last laugh.

We also had to finally unlock dorm users 100% after a student threatened to sue the university since dorm users are forced to purchase internet from the school network. Our thick headed IT director finally buckled after a meeting with our university attorney.

OPENDNS is the answer and it's free. Can viewed what website is visited and can block websites.

Be brave even if you're not. Pretend to be. No one can tell the difference.

filtering is a big problem for universities because some students do in fact need to look up things like breasts and vaginas and penis because they are medical students. Many filters are too dumb to know the difference between Debbie Does Dallas and New England Medical Journal. it catches Breasts anywhere in a meta tag and slams the door.
