Old RAM..??

Hello,

What do you guys do with your servers' old RAM..?? We just upgrade all our blades from 8GB to 32GB and now we have all this extra RAM and i m not sure what to do with it...

Any ideas? I have 32x 1GB PC2-5300 that came with the system we bough back in 2006/2007.

(other than maybe upgrading the RAM on some of the PCs around)

Thanks

well if it came out of a server it's likely ECC and maybe registered, so normal desktops likely can't use it

I'd look into company policy as to if the company can sell them or just put them in a drawer and mayeb upgrade any wrokstation level computers that use that spec ram

Assuming I can't use it along side the new stuff I put in, I would keep a few sticks on hand as spares and recycle the rest.

I like ^ idea...
I doh'd when I read that, I just bought new PC2-5300 ram, two 1gb sticks, to upgrade a household machine! But then DarkLogix right, if it's ECC, it won't work in that desktop anyway.
Yeah, try to sell it here or eBay...can't hurt...even if super-cheap, it's something...Or if you have a place local to you that does computer refurbs for the elderly or schools, etc...

If your company policy allows I'll take it off your hands, I have a DL380 G3 that uses ECC DDR2 ram and with 4 of those it would have 6GB of ram (currently it has 4x 512 and 2x 1gb)

though that home server hasn't been on in a while (a little hard to sleep with it on)

Hey Dark (or anyone else): I have a bit of old RAM to dump. I've practically begged in the for sale/trade forum for a taker to no avail for some of it.

16x 1gb PC2-5300
4x 2gb PC2-5300

The 1gb sticks are yours if you send me enough to cover the flat rate postage. As for the the 2gb -sticks make an offer. Those are via a friend who wants to get something out of them still.

BTW, check out freecycle.org and see if there's a local group near you when you have stuff you just want to give away. At least here in DC it's much better than craigslist for that.

They are registered, but doenst mention anything about ECC.

HP p/n: 398706-051
Spare p/n: 416471-001

1.0GB, 667MHz, PC2-5300, registered DDR2 Fully Buffered DIMMs (FBD) memory module

»partsurfer.hp.com/Search.aspx?Se···6471-001

I need to ask the Ops manager if i can just give them away.

If they're registered I'd bet they're ECC
the sticks I've seen if its like a steping first they'll be ecc then they'll add the chips to make it registered

easy way to tell is count the number of memory chips on it (8=non-ecc, 9=ecc, ofcourse then theres 16/32 ie multiples of 8, and 18/34)

what would be the shipping from IL to SE TX?

Depends how you want them shipped and how many I guess. Figure like $6 for a flat rate USPS box. Otherwise, probably like $10 from fedex/ups, depending on your specific location/route.

still thinking (I really need to hold spending till after christmas)
the DL380g3 I have has 4x 512's and 2x 1gb's so I think if I go for it it'll be the 4x 1gb's so it would have 6x 1gb's total

Might want to check your server too. The memory Pton mentions is FB DIMM, that won't work in a server designed for regular DDR2. Plus I looked up your server to see if it maybe supported FB-DIMM and it claims it uses DDR1 so if that's the case then none of these will work for you. Assuming this is your server anyway: »h18000.www1.hp.com/products/quic···div.html

techjoe, those 1gb chips aren't ECC?
I've got a Precision WorkStation 490 that can hold 'DDR2 PC2-5300' according the the Crucial scanner.

Seems like a great match! I'll take at least 4 of those 1gb sticks for shipping to zip 21122. IM me here?
Thanks!

By chance do you have a part number for either the 1GB or 2 GB sticks? Trying to determine what systems I have that they will fit (if they fit a system that's sitting in the corner with no intention of using then no point in getting memory for it, ya know).

Any idea what your friend was looking to get out of the 2 GB sticks? I'd most likely be interested in them as I have lots of similar 1 GB sticks in use already but if shipping is all you want for them then I'd likely be interested in those regardless.
