VONAGE is hands-down the WORSE VoIP company of all time

Events and TIMELINE
2003 became a VoIP customer; entered into Vonage's beta program; was DISASTROUS! Jumped out and went with AT&T CallVantage. The BEST VoIP service... ever!
Left AT&T CallVantage service because they didn't allow their boxes to be used internationally; wept when I had to leave that premiere quality service (technically) they were AWESOME.
Went to VYL Media... very poor technology and a HORRIFIC Owner name Denis Smith. Signed up with them in December of 2006 and left them in March/April 2009. Too many technical inefficiencies and the Owner Denis made it WORSE!
2009 back to VONAGE because of all the promotions and thinking they must have improved; they did NOT ... WORSE!
1.) Call-Waiting does not work
2.) They route calls to the wrong phone numbers
3.) They remove benefits... i.e., countries from your plan and you only realize that they have done so when you see the bill and countries that were suppose to be included in the monthly are not!
4.) There device box for connecting to the Internet is plagued with problems; oh God what NIGHTMARE
5.) They refuse to give refunds or lower the rate for their technically treacherous service.
6.) They charge anywhere from $18 -$25.00 in taxes and surcharges.
7.) They by their own incompetency practically impede your ability to leave their company because they FORCE you to sign their crummy contract and then disconnect prematurely before you have a chance to secure your phone numbers with another provider!
NO, for God sake do NOT use this company! It is the company from HELL! Oh man it has been the HORROR SHOW! Do NOT put you through the DEMISE I went through with this LOSER for the PATHETIC 'so-call' VoIP Provide called VONAGE! You do NOT need all these problems; NO you do NOT!

I completly agree with this assesment - 9 years here and could not be happier....

As with any technology, its best to understand how it works so you can work with the non-vonage pieces of the puzzle (your own home network, ISP) to make it work the way it is designed.

Hmmm... I'm right down the street and I've had service for 8 years. Only had 2 or 3 issues that were quickly resolved.

I'm NOT known here as a Vonage fan, but I agree with the others, sounds like there is a good chance your difficulties lay elsewhere.

As for "losing your number", it is standard practice (even specifically advised by the FCC) to let your NEW company handle the number porting. You don't talk to the old company until the port is done. Even if it is "lost" it should be retrievable for several days, perhaps even 30 days.

As for taxes and fees, it is what it is. If you want less expensive providers, they are available (such as VOIPo).

The fact that you would pick "VYL Media" tells me that you are NOT a good researcher. In the main VoIP forum on this website, that company is NEVER mentioned. The name alone---Voip Your Life---is fatally cute!

Actually, the blame for "technical inefficiencies" experienced with VYL back in 2006 (up through the present) could not fall on Dennis Smith. He was simply a reseller for RNK Telecom's VoIP product.

Close to a year with Vonage here and haven't had single hiccup at all, even when I changed my plan online form the World Plan to the 750 minute US/Canada plan. Month after I made the switch, it showed up on my dashboard and has been flawless still.

About the only complaint I could have is that you can't disable the firewall on the adapter they sent me, the VDV-22.

I had them for about five years with the very occasional problem, nothing at all serious (rare cases of echo, one time no audio on an incoming call). Not bad for years of service. I jumped only because of cost, the service was fine.

CLEARLY Vonage is paying some SEO company or some Online marketing company to post! Yes, this is a fact; many, many, many companies are now paying Online Marketers to POST positive REVIEWS on their behalf even when they are NOT earned! It is PATHETIC and DESPICABLE when a company has to pay a service to post good reviews because that company is incapable of receiving quality reviews on its own merits. VONAGE clearly does NOT have any! For example, one BOGUS poster posted, "had services for 15 yrs and never a problem." Vonage was NOT around 15 years ago... what does that tell one about this GARBAGE company Vonage??? I rest my case!

Probably some other companies are paying for negative reviews, too. Works both ways.

BTW, I have about 15,000 posts on this DSLR website, the large majority of which are not related to Vonage. And on those few occasions where I do write about Vonage, I am usually a critic. But there are two salient points: 1) They DO have millions of happy customers. 2) Nobody likes rants especially when they are FULL OF CAPITAL LETTERS.

That so-called bogus poster apparently mistyped or mis-remembered. But the earliest Vonage customers are at around 10 years now.

You call him a bogus poster, but he's been registered on this DSLR website for 10 years! See the date on his profile: [2001-12-30]. That compares to less than 10 days for you.

Two more salient points:

1) 10 years trumps 10 days for street cred.

2) I truly do not think that Vonage was "planting" people to register on this website 10 years ago.

Still have Vonage in my house; the numbers have still not yet transferred so my REVIEW is real. CONFIDENT that yours are NOT because they Timeline for many of the Postings here are FALSE! Vonage was NOT in business 15 yrs or even 9 yrs. ago! There was NOT VoIP 9 or 15 yrs ago! Suggest you clowns delete those quickly.

Will be reporting many of you to the Administration of this Website. It is WRONG for you people to be posting BOGUS REVIEWS because you can. When a company has to pay you hustlers to write up REVIEWS, then CLEARLY that company has serious problems. VONAGE is being SUED constantly! That you cannot deny or attempt to downplay with your BOGUS postings!

ATT CallVantage no longer exists, but certainly Vonage has various other competitors that might be paying for negative reviews. Now, IF they are paying that guy, it is money poorly spent, because his rant against Vonage is so over-the-top as to be a caricature.
