Error
Everyone,

Just upgraded Firefox to version 9.0 (was running 8.01) and I noticed a problem with the online version of Yahoo Messenger.

Let me see if I can describe what I'm doing, so others can see if they get the same issue, or if this is something specific to my setup.

First, I do want to point out that this worked without problem on Firefox 8.01.

Operating System is Windows 7 Enterprise, x64 bit.

Now, what I did, and what did not happen. Each step below goes with the attached picture for that step.

1) I went to Yahoo's main page, and signed in using my yahoo id and password.

2) Once I was logged in, I clicked on the "Mail" link (indicated by the red arrow).

3) I then clicked on the "Conversations" link, to open up any saved conversations I may have. I do this if the person I want to leave an IM with is offline, so they will get them later.

4) That brings up the list of conversations that I have saved, as shown in the screen for step #4.

5) I can then click up a conversation, so I can read the full thing. If I then want to send this person an off-line message, I can do so by hitting the reply button (indicated by the black arrow).

Now, this is where the problem is. The page that should come up normally had a place at the bottom to type a message, and when I would press enter, it would send it. There would be a note saying that the person may be off-line, and won't get the message(s) until they came back online.

However, all I get now is what is shown in "Yahoo Error". The red error points to what appears to be some kind of spinning thing, that never stops, or errors out.

Again, this was working fine up until I upgraded to Firefox Version 9. I also know its not a yahoo problem, as I currently have it up and running without problems in IE 9.

So, the question is, what broke! If anyone needs more info, or wants me to try anything else, let me know, as I'll be happy to perform any tests, or provide any needed information.

Thanks,

--Brian

Edit: Tested the above in FF 9.0.1, and the problem is still there. So, instead of making a new post, I figured I would update this one.

My Plugins
Instead of doing a 2nd edit, I figured I would post an update in regards to some of the testing that I have done.

First, I exported my bookmarks from Firefox (as that is really all I need to save). I then uninstalled Firefox 9.0.1, making sure that all files from C:\Program Files (x86) as well as all profiles were removed (no data in C:\Users\myprofile\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla) In fact, the Mozilla folder did not exist, so I knew it was a complete uninstall.

I then installed Firefox 8.0.1, and launched it. I made zero changes to the default install, or any of Firefox configurations (the tools menu), and went to yahoo's page. I then performed the same steps that I mentioned in my first post, to see if things worked as they did before. As I expected, it did work fine in Firefox 8.0.1.

I then performed an uninstall of Firefox 8.0.1 (same as before..verify that both the program files and profile data was removed), and did a fresh install of Firefox 9.0.1.

I again made no changes to the default install or settings, and went back and re-tested Yahoo's page.

Still does not work.

Finally, I did disable all my add-ons (I posted a picture to show which ones I have enabled) when I re-installed 9.0.1, and that did not make a difference.

So, I believe at this point, it is something inside of Firefox that changed between 8.0.1 and 9.0.1 that is causing this. Its not that big of a deal, as I can always launch IE9 (x64) to chat on yahoo to my one friend. But, it does make me wonder, what has changed in Firefox that would cause this.

I am having a similar issue with the new Firefox on LinuxMint - my contacts appear, but I am unable to open a chat window. I have turned off popup blocking to no effect.

Any ideas?

Sounds like a similar issue I posted about here:

»[FireFox] Firefox right click doesn't work in iCloud

Something about the page is blocked within FF.

Hi,
I am having the exact same problem. Contacts appear, but no chat window opens when double clicking. If a new message comes in from someone, only the Tab in FF where Y!Mail is running is showing something. Otherwise no chat window/frame appears.
I am on LinuxMint using FF 9.0.1

cheers.

Its good to see that other people are having the same problem. However, no one has a solution yet.

I also wanted to add that I have now moved away from Firefox, and I am running Waterfox (Firefox's 64 bit version). From the thread that talks about Watefox

"The Firefox source code is taken and compiled to run specifically for 64-Bit Windows computers. To make Waterfox stand out a bit more, it’s compiled with optimizations so that it will run more efficiently and faster than just compiling Firefox as a 64-Bit program."

So, I figured it too would fail. Just to verify, I did test it as well. Sure enough, Waterfox 9.0 also fails on Yahoo's page when trying to use the on-line version of Yahoo Messenger.

While I cannot speak for others who have this problem, I can easy get around it by launching IE (9.0, x64) and just keep this one page open, as it works. It is just interesting to me that something like this could break between Firefox 8.0.1 and Firefox 9.0.1.

Same problem here. Windows XP 32bit, FF 9.0.1. Contacts show in my messenger list but when double-clicking on them, no window is coming up. I wonder if this issue is known to Mozilla.

You can all try this site »ebuddy.com for web versions of messengers.

Yep same issue here.

It appears this is a known bug with FF 9.x.x. See bug report here: »bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=713014

There is a workaround in comment 7 on the above link. I have just tested it and can confirm it resolves the problem on my system. Using FF 9.0.1.

I took a look at the bug link, and all of the comments. While I have not tried it myself, it does appear that most people who have done the workaround does fix the problem. However, it appears that it is only temporary, as you have to apply the fix every time you log back into yahoo on the web.

I cannot verify this myself, as I have not tried the fix, I am just going off what others in that thread have said. So, I just wanted to point out that while that may workaround the issue, you may have to do it every time.

I may give the workaround a try, but knowing it does not "keep" between sessions, I will just hold off and use IE9 for talking on Yahoo Messenger, until firefox can resolve this issue.

By the way, the problem also happens in Waterfox 9.0 as well. Knowing that Waterfox comes from the same code base as Firefox, I am wondering if I should sign up and make a note of that in that thread, or if there is another whole bug track / fix site for Waterfox issues? I would hate them to do all this work and get Firefox working, only not to fix the same issue in Waterfox.

Plencnerb - just to let you know I haven't found that with the workaround. It's saved it to tabbed conversations and kept working for me even after logging out and fully clearing the browser cache.

EDIT - actually I don't fully clear the browser cache - I leave the box for clearing site preferences unticked, so perhaps that's why. I do clear all active logins and cookies etc though.

Found this on another bug page and appears to work:

I found a workaround to get chat to work.

STR:
1. Go into your Yahoo Messenger Options - Change the Window in the dropdown to Tab and press OK.
2. Then go back and switch it to small window and press OK.

After that I can get the chat window to launch. I tested on Mac as well as that workaround works.

History Settings #1

History Settings #2

While I know waterfox is not firefox, but for the most part it is, I went ahead and made the change in waterfox.

It does solve the problem. IM's now show up in this neat little window.

However, if I sign out of yahoo, and then sign back in I have to change the option (to tab, and then back to small window) for it to work.

Of note is that I DO NOT close the browser. I just sign out of yahoo, and then sign back in, and I have to make the change again to the messenger options. Once done, it does work.

For reference, I have attached my history settings in case one of them may be causing me to have to re-do this every time I sign into Yahoo.

While it is just a workaround, I don't expect it to be perfect. So, it is good to know that the workaround does work. Now its just a matter of time (I'm guessing) that the people at Mozilla figure out what needs to be done to fix this issue in Firefox (and of course, Waterfox), so that you don't have to do the workaround.

Yes, same problem here since upgrading to FF 9.0.1... no more texting. Why would they disable that? That's just plain ridiculous and unacceptable!

Having the same problem. FF9 and Win7 32bit
Unable to get messenger options to open at all.
I can get to mail options and themes, but when I click on Messenger options nothing happens. One time I did get the Option pages, but everything was grayed out and I was unable to change anything.
Annoying to have to open another browser just to chat with someone.
