news.cogeco.ca slow?

I've been using binary news for awhile, but speeds have dropped down quite a bit lately.. I used to be able to get between 1.2-1.3MB/s but right now that's around 300-500KB/s max.

HTTP doesn't appear affected, I can obtain 1.9-2.0MB/s from several sites.

Not too sure on that... Just tested @ home, hitting ~1.7MBps no problem

No idea.. someone else here mentioned it was quite large.

The speed hasn't really improved much, I reduced the simultaneous connections from 4 to 2 for now.

It has increased a bit, but doesn't go above 1MB/s anymore.

@cgocable.net

I just pulled down at 50mbps.

The oldest retention I have got is about 30days.

It looks like Cogeco is using usenetserver.com as an outsourced option (not uncommon by any means).

Can someone on Cogeco post a traceroute to news.cogeco.ca - curious to see what it looks like?

I do most of my usenet downloads from news.cogeco.ca. As a backup I have a block account with Astraweb.

Lately, I have been experiencing a variety of timeout errors with both news.cogeco.ca and other servers. Another odd thing is that when I split a large binary file between 2 or 3 download queues, I get different speeds in each queue; often the first connection I make is the slowest. I don't know if anyone else can explain this or has the same experience; it just has me puzzled.

My newsreader is Xnews.

I use SABnzbd, which is some program written in python.. has a fancy web interface.

The speed issues I have are mostly gone, but I had to actually bump the amount of concurrent connections I make to the server to get close to 1.9/2.0MB/s.

I used to be able to max out my connection on Ultimate 30 but now I'm hardly able to get 500KB/s. I've been using 5 connections at a time. I put it up to 20 connections and it jumped to 2000KB/s. Not sure what's going on but at least doing it this way can speed it up if you have multiple files.

Edit: 32 connections gives me 3500KB/s. Good enough for now I guess.
