What does "4G extended coverage area" really mean?

I find that on the Verizon coverage map I am in a "4G extended coverage area" which says I "might not" get consistent 4G service. Does anyone have any experience with service in a "4G extended coverage area"?

I've had Sprint's and now Verizon's "extended" coverage (though I am able to pick up LTE). It means don't bother to call them with a problem, they'll just tell you rotsa ruck (to quote Astro).

For me it means 3G. I got the Mifi from Milenicom the other day and because I live right next to a 3G tower and could only get 1-2 bars of 4G, it would always switch back to 3G after connecting to 4. I really wanted it to work but it didn't. Hopefully being in extended means real coverage is coming soon?

There should be an option in the config settings to lock the device into "LTE only" mode. Many in fringe areas have to do this, even on smartphones, and it generally works.

That's what I thought ... but I couldn't find one anywhere! Maybe I'm missing it?

Sorry, I thought it allowed LTE only, but I can't find it either in the docs.

Some options come to mind (none are ideal)...

Maybe you can buy a Pantech UML290 or Novatel 4501L from ebay (or elsewhere) and put the SIM card in that? Both of those devices can be locked into LTE only mode.

Or, there are antenna ports on the Samsung if you remove the back cover; maybe try connecting a directional antenna aimed at the 4g tower?

Or, go with a Verizon plan? I use my 4G phone as a hotspot.

I too have a closer 3G tower. But, locking into LTE only mode makes the difference and keeps it from switching to 3G.

Also, there's a brief thread about swapping SIMs here...

You can do this on HTC Android phones (and maybe others).
