 | [Internet] Road Runner Lightning Defective Router? I had road runner lightning installed at my house last month and I'm having some trouble with the ubee wireless router it came with. I only get maximum throughput when a device is within 10 feet of the router. The room with my desktop is no more than 40 feet away though an open hall way but it has never seen the 40Mbit speeds. Speedtest.net averages about 5-10mbit. I've tried two different wireless adapters on the computer but despite having 4 bars I don't see maximum speed.
Another problem is frequent wifi drops during downloading/browsing. Eventually it'll come back but sometimes require me to disconnect and reconnect to the router in windows. When the computer is first started it will take a bit of time to have internet access despite saying it already does in windows.
Does brighthouse offer a different modem/router besides the ubee for the lightning service? I went to a retail location to see if I could swap it out but they sent me away and told me to make an appointment for someone to come out. I'd rather not waste my time if they're just going to come out and give me another ubee modem, I can just buy a wireless N router, put DD-WRT on it, and have a full functioning non-locked out router. |

 | Thanks for the quick reply. I'm at work right now but when I get home in an hour I'll PM you the details. |

 | This Router is horrible. I have been in I.T. for 16 years and I have NEVER had so many problems. If you check the event log, you'll see the s/w updates always fail. I am so tired of technical support. They have NO CLUE! All they want to do is get you off the phone... This modem obviously suffers from a buffer issue because streaming anything for over 40 minutes fails on ALL wireless devices, cell phones, ipads, Macs and Windows... |

 | My experience with the Ubee router has been excellent; I have the DDW3611 which is only Internet (phone is running off Arris Modem). I know there is an All-in-One Ubee (Phone and Internet)......but opted to use the 2 separate pcs as recommended by the BHN Installer.
I have never had my Ubee drop\disconnect....or ever had a reason to ReBoot it. I live in a Home and the the wireless works well thru-out my home. I have had the Ubee for 7 months. I was told that the reason you see the Update failure is because BHN has locked that feature as they will Update the Software if necessary. |

The failure notice in the logs is normal unless there is actually an update (but you knew that already being in IT right) and no there are no "buffer" issues with this gateway. The gateway is not a perfect solution for everyone...we tell you that and you do have options...that of course to bridge it and use your own favorite router. -- ~All truth goes through three phases. BHN explicitly promises to supply and install a wireless Home Network as part of its Lightning service. For example, an excerpt from »brighthouse.com/corporate/shop/i···tworking : "Get connected to wireless Internet and stay connected. ... Bright House Networks technicians set up the wireless network for you."
BHN techs will NOT configure your personal wifi router to accomplish this, so bridging the BHN-supplied Lightning gateway does NOT satisfy BHN's commitment. |

When the device is installed initially it is configured for the average home wireless network, secured etc... (1 wifi device, 1 wired).
At this point you have two choices...you can configure the other devices yourself along with any other wireless devices you own (we will provide you the user login details at the time of installation) OR for a nominal one time charge we will configure the router and all of your wifi connected devices for you.
For those people that place above normal demands on the provided gateways or who want more control over the router than we provide your best option is to bridge the gateway and use your own router and of course configure your wireless devices on your own. You have lots of choices here... it is up to you to make the decision as to which way you want to go.
Oh and yes... if you have other third party equipment like wireless printers, surround sound systems etc...we will install them as they apply to existing BHN services. Charges do apply but the option is most certainly available to you if that's something you want us to do.

I am having Lightning and the phone installed on Monday. Would I be better off asking the tech to bridge the modem and use my Linksys E3000?
I only run a Playstation streaming Netflix and a HP printer. We are in Orlando. |

I only run a Playstation streaming Netflix and a HP printer. We are in Orlando. Ross I would try the using the gateway alone first and if it works out then no worries. Worst case you can bridge and use the e3000. -- ~All truth goes through three phases. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed.
