| said by amark:he mentioned he has normal-does not pay for extra Normal differs for EVERY ISP, geopgraphic location, etc.
Also normal will differ depending on how oversubscribed the distribution node may be...
Your friend may be paying for 30/5 and only getting what you describe

| said by amark:OK-is this speed good for basic? As has already been mentioned, that really depends on your definition of "basic".
If I got that kind of speed on my "basic" AT&T 3 mbps DSL connection, I would be ecstatic:

However, if I consistently got such slow speeds on my "basic" Comcast 12/2 service, I would not be nearly as happy as I am with the typical results shown below:

| reply to amark I can add this.... Which will just confuse things further...
I went from a Linksys WRT54G V1 to an E2000, and my download jumped.. from 12 to 20 dn, 3 to 4 up.
But I'm not sure if that was because the Cable interface saw Gigabit instead of 100Mb connected to it's interface... Or just an improved Router.... There was some talk that this happened because the cable interface thought I was then business (Gigabit), or not, I don't know.... but that's what happened.
There was a second issue for the upgrade... The routers all around me were continuously interfering with one-another, and it was kind of funny... I'd scan the channels, and find them on 6 one week, 11 another, 1 next.... The weren't checking, just changing channels, So I went from 2Ghz to 5Ghz just to get the hell away from them, and all their 'bouncing around'... I'm still the only 5Ghz signal within earshot.. I check now and then, and they are still doing this, 1+ year later... -- Looking for 1939 Indian Motocycle |

Just an improved router with much more capable firmware and YES gigabit interfaces when matched to good firmware are significantly superior performers. -- David Mozer IT-Expert on Call Information Technology for Home and Business |

| reply to amark I have the 4200, with 3 computers; 2 Macs and 1 PC.
I pay my ISP for 40mbps/down and 5mbps/up. I have Mac wired to the 4200 and get 37.3/down and 4.7 up, with a ping rate of about 28ms through speed tests. However, my 2 wireless computers get about the same.
The only reason I don't get closer to the 40/5 is because of limitations of my ISP, not because of the 4200.
I advocate getting the 4200 if you are looking for a new Router. I also stream to a Roku with it and it has never missed a beat with a perfect 1080p picture. -- Obama in 2012.....No More TeaBaggers! |
