[CATV] Charter didn't inform of local buy out

I'm staying at my parent's home for Christmas this year. My mom told me they were expecting a Charter tech to come out today from an appointment that was made last week after she had called Charter and asked about HD service for the new TV my step dad bought her for Christmas. They told her that HD service was not available in our area, but they did offer a "box" that would strengthen our signal and make the picture more clear. So they setup an appointment for today and we waited for the tech that was scheduled to call and arrive by 5pm. At around 4pm, we started to worry that the tech would not show, so my mom called Charter to confirm the appointment but instead got some depressing news.

On this call after my mom explained the situation, Charter told her that our service area was recently bought out by a company called Southern Cable Systems. We were told that we would have to call them and schedule an appointment to get this "box" setup through them and it would be sometime in mid January before someone could come out and install it. When asked why we were never informed of this, the Charter rep replied saying that they were not required to inform us of anything. They also could not explain as to why the Charter rep from before was even able to setup an appointment for a Charter tech to come out and install the signal box. Its as if that never happened. After the phone call, my mom was very upset. She told me about the new company in charge for servicing our area and asked me to look them up online for her. The website looks very generic. I don't know if these guys are a reseller or a provider of their own service but I assume they are a Charter reseller. We don't know how long ago this local buy out was done, but my mom mentioned she has been and still gets the bill in the mail from Charter.

I don't like how Charter handles these kind of situations. I don't know if this is just routine for small area customers or something they do to everyone but I do know that we were never informed of anything. My mom has been a loyal customer of Charter for over 9 years, has never missed a payment and even went a whole year without cable service after hurricane Katrina hit. You would think after that long of being a loyal customer that more informative service would be given, but I guess that doesn't matter.

So with that being said, can someone tell me more about this "box" that we were supposed to have already installed today from some Charter tech that obviously doesn't exist anymore. Also could anyone explain to me why Charter neglects informing customers of changes in their service?

What area is it? Does she live in an apartment complex, or private community?

As for the box, it's probably an amplifier.

A) you fail to even mention your area.

B) you're no longer Charter customers you're customers of this Southern Cable Systems company. Charter may have been shitty about not notifying you, but it's done. Charter doesn't have "re-sellers". You either get Charter or you don't.

C) I doubt you'll be getting HD from this new company since Charter didn't seem fit to enable it prior to selling. I suggest going with dish or DirecTv.

"Charter doesn't have "re-sellers". You either get Charter or you don't."

Wrong. We have a wholesale agreement with them.

And this was our choice how? You're making it sound like we purposly switched carriers. We didn't do anything! Up until a few hours ago we thought we were still with Charter. So why would they tell us we are now getting service through this new company? Should we call Charter about this?

And as for location, my mom lives in her own house on private property owned by her. But the place is just a small town and very rural.

Thank you for providing information based on facts and not assumption like most people seem to do these days.

You won't find anyone who is going to wholesale just internet through Charter because there is less than a $5-10 difference between their wholesale and retail rates. We have the agreement because the Charter circuit is part of a larger bundle of services, like Hosted PBX, Redundancy, Cloud Desktop, etc.

The OP says that Charter told him his area was BOUGHT OUT. He didn't say Charter is still servcing him under a re-seller. Just like my area was Time Warner unti it was BOUGHT OUT buy Charter 12 years ago. Charter isn't "re-selling" Time Warner service in my area.

I didn't say it was your choice.

You're making it sound like we purposly switched carriers.

Nope. Never said or implied it You're being defesnive for no reason whatsoever

We didn't do anything!

never said you did.

Up until a few hours ago we thought we were still with Charter. So why would they tell us we are now getting service through this new company?

Because sometimes cable companies sell out areas to other cable companies. Before my area was a Charter area is was a Time Warner area. Before that it was with some other cable company. That's within the last 20 years. A few years from now it could be Comcast. That's just how it goes. Nothing you can do about it.

Should we call Charter about this?

You posted that you talked to Charter already. But if you want, go to the Charter Direct Forum on this site and ask.

And as for location, my mom lives in her own house on private property owned by her. But the place is just a small town and very rural.

location as in the town you live in. Not your address. kind of hard for anyone to help you if we don't know where you are located at.

What incorrect statement? I made no such incorrect statement.

YOU stated that Charter told you that they sold off your area.

That's YOU making that statement not me.

You want to believe that Charter is still providing you service through a re-seller. You found someone to confirm that belief so therfore I must be incorrect about Charter no longer being your cable TV provider( based on what YOU said ) and that gives you an excuse to make snide comments.

"YOU stated that Charter told you that they sold off your area."

Where? Show me where I said anything about Charter selling off my area.

"That's YOU making that statement not me."

It's septcasey's statement. That's why it says "said by septcasey" and not "said by battleop"

whatever dude. My point still stands. Where am I wrong? YOU said I was wrong. shall I quote you? Now YOU show me where I am wrong?

Typically the "new" company takes out radio spots, tv commercials and other similar methods to inform the customers that a new provider will be taking over at "x" date. A small company like Southern Cable may not have the funds for the "let's be nice and let folks know what's going on".

When Charter is buying out a system, they typically (as of this year for sure ) run advertisements at least two months in advance. If your parents are anything like my wife, she turns the radio station when commercials come on, changes the TV station, and inserts in the bill other than the section she mails back gets thrown away. She'd wouldn't know about any transition regardless what was done to inform her.

As for Charter neglecting to inform anyone, if they aren't required by law then they don't have to. But even if they were to inform the customers, they would have at a minimum done it through inserts in the bill. As I said above, people tend to throw away every insert minus the actual bill.

EDIT: If you post the town&state, you'd be able to get better answers to what went down in that area. People in the know do peruse the forum.

At the very least, there would have been a news story done by a local newspaper, radio/TV station on this.

That's how it was here when Charter sold us off to Atlantic Broadband in 2005.

Did you not say "Charter doesn't have "re-sellers". You either get Charter or you don't."

I said you were wrong. The company I work for has a wholesale agreement with Charter. That means we can resell Charter under our name. There are other companies that also have resell agreements with Charter.

Website, found in a Google search:

»southerncable.net/

The site's About page states that the company provides specialty contract services for several MSOs in the Southeast.

Then why are we still getting bills in the mail FROM CHARTER? And my mom also told the Charter rep she would consider switching to dish because Charter never keeps her updated. After she said that, Charter offered us a "holiday" package but all they did was give us the movie channel on her already basic cable package. So how did they do that if Charter isn't servicing us anymore?
