Re: [ALL] Cox Upstream Channel Bonding

said by tubbynet:

i have been contemplating making the jump to a d3 modem, but i wanted to get bonding in both directions.

Only one upstream channel in Scottsdale (85254). If the lack of an upstream channel is the only factor in the decision not to go D3, I'd say do it sooner rather than wait.

i only pay for the preferred level of service. i don't do heavy downloading/uploading. i usually just have uploads to a corporate ftp server on projects that i'm working on or something to my dropbox. i don't have a television, so most of my media is streaming (pandora, netflix, hulu, sirius/xm). i rarely use more than 100gig/month and i consistently hit my speed ratings at all times of the day.

the only time where i'm wishing for a little more 'uumph' is when i'm pushing a lot of files or working remotely on client networks. i don't need it very often (which is why i don't upgrade tiers) but i would like a little more when i need it. hence the reason for channel-bonding on the upside of d3.

plus -- i'm surprisingly cheap. the motorola sb5120 i purchased on ebay for $8 (no shipping, local pickup) has lasted me 6 years. i can't see spending that much money on a modem just yet.

I'm very surprised that, at least from what this thread shows, Jefferson Parish Louisiana is getting upstream bonding before most other Cox markets. We aren't exactly the tech capitol of the region, are we?

Doesn't LA have that muni fibre? that could be why.

If that was the reason many area's would be lit up as well. There is still a decent amount of area's that cox serve with FIOS as an option. There are other reason's behind cox using LA as there launch point for this, but we will never know because cox likes to keep things quiet. An only let you know what they want you to know, I really can't even remember cox talking about upstream channel bonding. It might be months before we see any type of news release regarding them starting to upstream channel bond.

Just for the record, the fiber project is only in the city of Lafayette, and only parts of it, as well, afaik.

Not in New Orleans. Kinda weird to see N.O. get the last of the D3 light ups, but yet they are first on upstream bonding. Maybe they have newer equipment?

I don't think that's the reason at all, I have heard most new D3 equipment is ready for upstream channel bonding. So when things like the CMTS was upgraded during D3 deployment, it should be ready equipment wise. Maybe some software and such updates are needed, but most area's with D3 active should be ready for upstream channel bonding to be active. Just a matter of putting things to use, which means cox must have been doing internal testing for a little while now, and finally feel comfortable enough to start deploying it to its customers. So now this is probably next step of doing limited testing with customers, and if things work as planned, with only few hiccups. We might see a good amount of cox's D3 area's bonding upstream by the end of 2012.

Also it may not be the best ideal to test something like this in a high customer area for cox.

Sounds like code for phoenix will be the last to get it like we were for ondemand.

I am wondering if cox will be rolling this out nationwide
this year. I had it for a few hours then it died.

That's my zip code. I have 8 downstream channels bonded. One upstream bonded.

85249 just like you. Maybe some day we will get more than one.

Kenner, LA. I've been lit up here for maybe a week or two?

Don't see any 64QAM tuners yet though...maybe they'll eventually make their way out to Kenner.

said by SlashG42:

As posted in the other thread, this went live in Metairie (New Orleans suburb) zip 70002 about Dec. 19th, give or take a couple days.

In speed test, it's 15-17mbps upload the whole time, but it reads in at 11-13mbps every time. I don't know if the upload test is broken at higher speeds or what.

[att=4]

It drops at the end because we're all still capped at ~3Mbps upstream. At the beginning of the speedtest (if you're using speedtest.net or speedtest.no.cox.net), there will be a burst of up to 21Mbps (highest I've seen on mine) and then the speed will reduce. The problem lies in how the website tests/analyzes the transfer. Go over to testmy.net and select the 17.5MB upload test and you'll see an accurate speed.

This should say it all..

Heres mine

Thing about QAM64 on the upload is its sensitive to noise.
hard to tell why because upstream SNR is only viewable from cox's end.

I do believe a good amount of cox's D3 footprint will see upstream channel bonding this year. But I believe there is no way, 100% of there D3 footprint will be upstream bonding by the end of this year. Also enough with that sad face, you at least know upstream bonding is there in your market. Just a matter of most likely tweaking being done, and will be back soon. A lot of us are still in the wait and see mode of just seeing it lit up for the first time.

Still seeing upstream bonding is only one step closer to what a lot of us want, and that's faster upload speeds. So there is still a wait after bonding appears on the upstream. But its nice to be one step closer .

Not a CMTS guru...though I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express

The channel bonding is performed by the CMTS and CM

Chips made by Broadcom.

In the upstream the BCM3142 and BCM3216 are doing the work.
