Will this store name get us picketed & shot at?

Poll
Can I get away with this store name in the east village?

No people will try to kill you because they'll think you're badmouthing third world countries

Yes it's 2011 and in a progressive neighborhood people will get the joke

We're opening a store in the east village that sells parts & repair services with these parts, and lowering our prices to be 50% less than any local competitor.

I was thinking "Rossmann's Mac Repair Sweatshop"

then under it,

"First world service @ third world prices!"

Employees collectively came up with this. From diverse backgrounds, every one of them wants to see me go with this. So I am actually considering it.

It's been my finding as a consumer and as a vendor that people in New York routinely expect to be ripped off at every turn, whether it is apartment costs, $3 Snapples & Vitamin waters at many fast food venues, parking, etc. So, I wanted something that played to the fact that you're spending less here, then you are in the middle of nowhere where companies have very low overhead.

We also work our asses off, myself and business partner being there about 14 hours a day, so we figured there was some truth to it as well.

I think it will

a) get you sued by Apple for tarnishing their brand

b) get you a lot of publicity, which will be good assuming Apple doesn't sue you out of existence.

Think up something else. Everyone will be cool with it UNTIL some frumpy chick who can't get any decides it's not PC and starts writing poison keyboard posts on blogs and gets on Channel 5 News at 10 to whine about how it offends her and how "everyone who is socially conscious and concerned will make it clear to the owners that it's not cool to make fun of third world countries." Once that happens, all the hipsters (who thought it was cool) will suddenly do an about face and follow her lead.

I have seen this very scenario played out many times.

Just change "Mac" to "Fruit" ;D

You can always claim you repair blackberries to fend off Apple.

In all serious truth, you're fucking yourself. Apple won't put up with it, the neighborhood won't put up with it, and you're going to generate enough bad publicity that hipsters will block customers from walking into your place.

Catchy names are overrated. Reputation and name recognition are EVERYTHING. TekServe isn't exactly the most catchy name on the market, and they're globally famous.

PhoenixDown See Profile and dv8or See Profile make good points about the use of "Mac." Quite honestly, as someone who lives in the West Village, the name does nothing to make me want to trek across town to check the place out. Keep the name short and politically neutral. don't expect clients to share your sense of humor.

Re: Will this store name get us picketed & shot at?

Some people may get upset (although there's really nothing to be getting upset about) but I don't think Apple could sue you. Plenty of businesses have Mac in their name. I'm no lawyer, but I think everyone here is exaggerating at least this particular point.

I don't find the name particularly creative or interesting.

I find most hipsters to be educated by the undereducated and overly-reactive, however.

Good luck getting any cooperation from Apple, though, and to do any decent Mac business, you need to be an authorized repair shop. Also, plenty of businesses do have Mac in their name, but how many of those names are disparaging Apple in some way? My guess is next to none.

The authorized comment is untrue. Being authorized is incredibly limiting. We're not interested in telling people they must pay to replace their entire mainboard because a single $2.42 0402 package device has failed. There's a particularly slow turnaround time and narrowing of options one must work with if you take that path. I'd rather earn the business through reputation.

Everything else considered, I will be telling the guys I appreciate it, but that I will be looking for a more traditional store name. All things considered, I do not think it would have played well, as the place is being designed inside to look modern and be more "luxurious" in terms of making the tech's life easy, so sweatshop would not have made sense. This place is supposed to be a culmination of what I always wished existed to create the fast and simple workflow I desire at previous places of employment.

Thank you very much for all of your comments!

How do you get replacement parts at exchange prices if you're not authorized?

There are many LG panel brokers that are happy to sell to anyone willing to buy enough. They don't care if you're Apple authorized if you're a reputable trading partner.

Logic boards can be refurbished most of the time through simple IC replacement. Who needs Apple Authorization to replace 0402 packages? 0402 is easy enough for an intern.

Hitachi and LG brokers will sell optical drives that fit Apple laptops. Often in older models, Hitachi drives outlast the Panasonic UJ-857-C that are installed in the factory.

Keyboards, frame & body sections, and others come from numerous other factories. They're trickier to come by in actual new condition. Apple doesn't produce any of these parts themself, nor do they control the distribution of them. Oftentimes, machinery used to produce specific portions of Apple machines get sold off dirt cheap when production is finished. Other companies buy this stuff and employ people to produce the part.

Or, scenario #2: let's say we have to make 20,000 of X product today. We have 21,000 of a component used to make X product arrived. To eliminate financial waste, the 1000 excess is sold to a company that sells to us. Usually there are two or three other distributor middlemen in the process that we cut out.

An LP133WX1-TLA1 from LG is still an LP133WX1-TLA1, whether it comes from Apple or an LG trading partner who buys on a massive scale then sells to a company like ours. As long as it's not refurbished, carton 9, A-/sorted A- goods, we're happy to take them, test them, and use the good stock to bring people's machines back to life for a reasonable amount.

Honestly, I am just going by what I hear. For all I know a magic fairy produces these parts for resale to us and others like us. I've had enough experience to tell the difference between certain parts manually pulled or actually new, and enough of these are actually new for me to wonder just how much control Apple has over the process of distribution of them.

If you buy an NAD or Adcom amp, or Monitor Audio or Axiom speakers, and you blow them due to accidental damage, there are numerous shops that are authorized by the owners who will fix the problem for parts cost + $75/hr, or less. For Apple, they want to beat you over the head with a baseball bat if you break your machine. I am glad there is not a great degree of control over the distribution of those parts, because they give no avenues other than frankensteining laptops to provide affordable service to those in need of rationally priced repair jobs.

Do you want to pay $450 when your backlight stops working on a machine with that circuitry embedded into the board at an authorized distributor, or $25 + an hour's labor with a 1 year warranty here? Apple also has little sympathy for people with 2008-2009 15.4" Unibody machines. They are NOT Unibodies! The display is a dualbody. It's one piece glued to another; and the glue always, always, always comes off on the bottom. See how much sympathy you get walking into an authorized store when that part starts to come undone. You either pay almost enough for another machine, or go to a shop that buys a piece that's already used & half unglued off eBay, that charges you $700.I don't feel like telling people their machine is a paperweight if they don't put a two month car payment down when the problem is being caused by something so simple an intern could fix it with proper direction.

Hope this sheds some light on things.

The name is cute. Skip the slogan. You won't be shot, but the slogan will cause you to lose a percentage of your possible clientele in NYC (which means business failure).

As for the name, the biggest mistake retail businesses make is not stressing what it is they do. Putting two words on your sign in the largest letters possible will get you more business than anything else. Those two words simply are 'COMPUTER REPAIR'. (Or mac repair, etc.) The smaller those words become, when embedded in all sorts of other catchy words, are a recipe for a failed business. Nobody will care about any other catchy words you put on the sign. Its not the reason they will choose your business; only a possible reason for not choosing it.
