Re: Christmas Day at Moose Lake For fan blade design, you may wish to look at: »www.geaviation.com/education/theatre/genx/
You can also look at the Airbus A380 engine GP7000:

In particular:

As you can see, the fan blades are a tad more complex to create in a 3d software than old style ones. |

 | reply to vue666 For steampunk you need some copper pipes running between the design's elements. Don't run them though along the wingspan. Keep the wings clean. Also, maybe a couple of cogs for tilting the fans. -- Keep It Safe, Stupid! Yes, I CanChat. Can You? |

| BTW, the material on the outer casing which is directly next to the blades is now different from that of the rest of the casing.
One of the rules is that should a blade fall out or break, that material must be able to contain it and not allow the blade to propell itself outside of the casing and damage the aircraft.
(on jet engines, the amount of energy in a single blade is very large and should it be let loose at high RPM, it would pierce the wing (which contains fuel tanks) and possibly the fuselage.
There have been a few cases of deaths, one in the 1990s when the engines on a DC9 (attached to fuselage in the back) lost some blades which pierced into the cabin and killed a passenger.
Turboprop aircraft like the dash-8 can't have such outer casing. But in your case, the casing can be important to prevent an escaping blade from rupturing the helium tanks in the airship. |

Cheers |
|
 | Don't worry, the material can be painted the same. Otherwise, you can just put a ring of another color inside the duct a bit wider than the aria swept by the fan. See here. -- Keep It Safe, Stupid! Yes, I CanChat. Can You? |

| Another aspect is that the ring directly around the blades has to be EXTREMELY precise. They want to have as little space as possible between the edge of the blade and and the containment ring so that aerodynamics are maximised. Reducing toerances to a minimum also requires the containment ring to retain its precise shape at all times so that no blade ever touch it while remaining extremely close to it.
Consider that on modern jet engines (this wouldn't affect your engines for an airship), when the jet travels at mach 0.82, it means that the edge of the blades rotate at a spead greater than the speed of sound and this brings in a whole slew of problems with regards to shockwaves, but the structure must not be deformed to ensure blades don't touch it. |

 | reply to jfmezei Lay off him, for Pete's sake, it's a steampunk balloon! For what he needs it is good enough. I know there are a few other errors, but none are detectable for an untrained eye. What is striking and important is already there. -- Keep It Safe, Stupid! Yes, I CanChat. Can You? |

vue666Humour,no one takes it seriouslyPremium join:2007-12-07 Halifax, NS | I'm now texturing the model. In order to does so I have to de-construct the model into the various components and then apply textures using UV Mapper, 3D Coat and Photoshop Elements. The re-construct the model from the various object parts.... I've opted against using mostly shaders ( n Vue) and decided to go with texture mapping....
I've still have a few more components to texture and add back to the zep.... |
|
 | Can you try to apply the texture from the front towards the back as opposed to from the top towards the bottom? It gives the threads from the panels an unnatural direction. You would expect them to be more or less along the directions of the mesh visible in the previous stage of your design. -- Keep It Safe, Stupid! Yes, I CanChat. Can You? |
