[DSL] Dry Loop Prequalification Question

I am moving into an apartment in Verizon territory and am looking into several different providers for DSL service and am curious about some strange stuff that's cropping up in the prequalification process.

Verizon is offering speeds "up to" 3 mbps for dry loop service at my new address. A check of some other Internet providers also show a 3 mbps tier available in addition to 1.5 (Earthlink in particular comes to mind). DSL Extreme is offering only 1.5 at that address.

Just for giggles, I ran some prequalifications for DSL Extreme dry loop at some other addresses in the complex, and am curious why the maximum speed tiers being offered are varying so wildly from 1.5 to 5.0 mbps. A couple of addresses next door to each other, in the same building, jump from 1.5 to 5.0 mbps.

I'm not necessarily questioning my own prequalification, but I'm wondering what sort of bizarre wiring (or database quirk) would lead to such a broad range of prequal results? Is there any way to know "for sure" what is actually available there? I'm fairly sure the whole complex is served off a remote terminal, which would imply a 3.0 mbps speed cap. It would also imply a fairly short loop length, but I have no way of determining that for sure.

Any ideas?

There is no way to really know what speed you are able to get until putting the request in and Verizon will do the work from there. Typically in rural areas the max speed is around 3.0Mbps.

As for the reason different apartments near you come up with different speeds, Verizons database does some funky things. There is no good explanation for this, I have had several addresses that say they weren't serviced by Verizon only to be able to hook them up in the end and they worked fine.

Hi kg4peq,

As ComputerPros mentioned, there's no way to be certain until we can test it. Verizon's databases are pretty good, but not perfect. I supposed their system may be prequalifying some of the address to the CO instead of the RT. Could also be due to the wire gauging that shows up in their system as well.

I couldn't find a map for RTs, but I found one here that shows where the COs are.

I hope you find this helpful. Please let us know there's anything else we can help out with. Thank you.

Best regards,

Ivan,

Thanks for the reply. Sorry it's been a while. Moving is apparently a very time-consuming process!

I have decided to go with Comcast for my primary connectivity but still need a DSL connection for some of the less time-sensitive "heavy lifting" of huge files. I spoke with Verizon and the agent stated that the line is currently "set for" 1.5 mbps service.

Now my question from here is whether there is any way for either DSLX or VZ to run an MLT to verify this is correct?

I suppose I could manage with the 1 or 1.5 mbps service. If an MLT cannot be performed on an inactive pair (there is no POTS or DSL on this line at this time) is there any chance of having the situation reviewed upon connection of service if I did end up going with DSLX?

EDIT: Assuming that the pair goes directly to the CO, that would put me somewhere between 10000 and 12000 feet. I'm reasonably certain there's an RT right around the corner, but of course the line could be going straight to the CO.

Thanks again for your help!

Hey kg4peq, Ivan's moved on (and literally moved, he's down in the Bay Area now), but I'll go ahead and take a look into this tomorrow for you. I'm pretty sure Ivan's noted your contact information down, but feel free to send it to me as well if you wish.

Thanks, Nick. I don't think I sent him anything specific to my location. I will send that to you now.
