spyork join:2002-10-09 Lexington, KY | VLAN functionality - Which router and switch? I'm looking to replace an aging 24-port 100MB switch and router at home. I would like to upgrade to equipment that can support VLANs, so I can have more control over my network. I would like to be able to setup VLANs and then be able to assign each port on a switch a specific VLAN. Will the Zywall USG 20 be sufficient or will the USG 50 be required? Also I'm looking at some of the Zyxel switches. Would the GS1510-16/24 be a good option and fully support VLANs? I don't want to spend too much money here, just purchase only what I need to accomplish the task at hand. Any suggestions on equipment would be greatly appreciated. Thanks... |

 | Do you need the spam filters and IDP stuff on the USG? SSL VPN? If not look at the Prestige 2812 and Prestige 2612. Maybe the 2612 if your not on DSL, its cheaper and got 5GHz Wifi, they both support IPv6 now. -- "Perl is executable line noise, Python is executable pseudo-code."

The torturer strikes again inflicting misery on Kentucky who alas, has no access to such products in NA. What is a a 2612 or 2812?? I hope they are better than the 660 series ADSL2+ or P800 series VSDL,which must be ancient Egypt by now.
To accurately reflect product availability, your best bet is to look at the USG 50 tech spec data sheet which compares all the USG routers. I would go with a USG50 for a second WAn option, 5 year warranty vice two and overall better specs.
As for the switch. Correctomundo!! Those are the low end Gigabit managed switch devices for the offices. Unfortunately the PDFs for specs and User guide are so badly botched up ( at least for my reader ) that I cannot ascertain its limitations. It appears that it does vlan tagging but NOT port based vlan (which is fine as you seem to want to do vlan tagging based approach - that is assign each port on a switch with a vlan tag ID - presumably to form different vlan groupings). -- Ain't nuthin but the blues! I never used one, but it looks as if it supports both port-based VLANs as well as VLAN trunk ports with 802.1Q tagging. -- Got some spare cpu cycles ? Join Team Helix or Team Starfire! |

Naw, Just AcerbicPremium join:2001-07-16 Dartmouth, NS kudos:3 | reply to spyork Also from another thread it looks like the USG series is capable of assigning Vlans (routing and tagging) to data packets. Although without a smart switch in action you may be mixing public and vlan packets on the same ports (probably okay for the home but not business?).
It appears in general....
Smart Switch: Advantages Keep vlans separate from public packets (better security and flexibility). More efficient for internal VLAN traffic (faster no load on router),.
Disadvantages Smart Switch: Cost
Router: Advantages. Cost Savings (dont need smart switch)
Disadvantage. Load Router with vlan processing, mix public and private packets.
Last Q. If you have a smart switch should it do all the Vlan tagging and leave the router to firewall rules, policy routes and vlan routing. -- Ain't nuthin but the blues! "Albert Collins". Leave your troubles at the door! "Pepe Peregil" De Sevilla. Just Don't Wifi without WPA, "Yul Brenner"

| Consistent with the other thread, I believe managed switches and smart switches and not too dull switches do VLAN tagging of up-flowing traffic, and tag stripping of down-flowing traffic (if the port is not a trunk to another VLAN aware switch). VLAN aware routers do VLAN tagging of down-flowing data to VLANs and tag stripping of up (WAN) flowing data.
I found it necessary to read the user manuals of a few VLAN capable switches (Cisco, ZyXEL, HP, Netgear), as well as some web content on VLANs for small businesses to become marginally familiar with the subject.

The 660 series was very good, but you need to control your FW trunk, if not you can end up with anything....
Looks like they are available globally

They got about 1Gbps routing and did I mention IPv6? -- "Perl is executable line noise, Python is executable pseudo-code."

spyork join:2002-10-09 Lexington, KY | reply to spyork Thanks for the info guys. Sorry it's taken me so long to get back, but life has been busy... I don't really have need for SPAM filtering, but the SSL VPN functionality would be nice. In regards to the USG 20 and 50, what is the difference between these two when it comes to setting up and configuring VLANs? Does the USG 50 have more VLAN functionality? |
