 | Cisco 1142N vs 1042N Anyone have any expierence with either of these? We are looking to change AP's from our current 1131ag and move to something with N. Main differences i see are on the 1142 they have 3x2 mimo vs 2x2 mimo on the 1042. Also they have ClientLink, BandSelect, and VideoStream. ClientLink/Beamforming sounds interesting and if it actually works as advertised it may be worth the extra cost.
According to Miercom it works great! »www.cisco.com/en/US/solutions/co···Link.pdf
According to real world non paid testing it doesnt »revolutionwifi.blogspot.com/2010···and.html
Either way i have a fat 1142n comming in for testing to play with so i will find out for sure, but seeing if anyone else has made this choice. Cisco says they came out with the 1040 series to basically compete with a model from someone else, guessing aruba but not sure.
Our cost on the 1142 is $388 and on the 1042 is $310, so is the 1142 worth $78 more per unit than the 1042? We will probably use around ~130-180 of them next year so the savings adds up. |

 | do you have WLC or WCS? |
|
 | Not currently but thats the route we are thinking of going towards. We are checking into the 7500 series cloud controller. We currently have over 2000 fat 1131ag in the field, but we have a connection to each location that has them. We could start out using the 7500 to control the new access-points then at some point convert the fat ap's to LAP's and use the controller for them. |

 | reply to cooldude9919 well, than you may have to change the OS on them individually @ some point... the WAPs come with 2 version codes one is a LWAP and the other is autonomous... this may cause you a large burden to change.
IMHO you should go with 1142s for the 2x3 MIMO and bandselect it gives you a better thruput and perf over the long run, but I'd look into buying the controller together and deploy them in parallel... |

Yep im aware of the IOS change that is required, and obviously that would be a lot of work but i feel it would be worth it in the end for better controlling and management of the AP's.
If we go the cisco route we would probably start off with the 7500 with the 300ap license then scale up later.
Thanks for the suggestion on the 1142, i should have one in here next week to do some testing on it. |

 | You'll soon realize what you are about to step into and cry your eyes out and pull all your hair out as Cisco's Licensing on APs are a Voodoo Magic Science and a nightmare for one AP you may need as much as 5 or more licenses depending on your fail over tactics and other devices you purchase to increase your visibility such as Location server, WCS, or NCS etc...
Good luck |

We have the 1142's for spaces where there will be large gatherings of people since our testing showed it could handle larger numbers better. We also got 4 5508 controllers to manage them all.
WCS is the old way to manage them, you'll want NCS. |
