[Newsgroups] Newshosting search is terrible

Decided to try out Newshosting for a month. I've never used newsgroups before, so it is all new to me. I went with Newshosting because it was $10, good amount of connections, and they had free software to use. Also the provider and software was recommended by places on the internet.

One gripe I have is the search feature. It seems to come back with a lot of crap results, results that don't even have all my keywords. And if I search a different way (such as omitting terms) I can get more results (results that have keywords that I omitted!). None of it seems logical.

Anyone else experience the search to perform terrible?

Places like...pay per sign up sites? At this point, the most honest reviews and opinions are better found on forums with real users of all the services weighing their own opinion.

Some probably were, others were forums, including this one.

Have you used newshosting and their client?

Is there a newsgroup you would recommend that has a better search for a similar price?

Add Newzbin to Newshosting.

sounds more like a problem with how you search for things rather than the app itself. I've been using it now for a couple months and have had no issues getting my content.
To the contrary, I've actually found alot more stuff lately...

Whenever I'm not satisfied with the Newshosting results, I change the search to binsearch.info - which then pulls the NZB into the app directly without having to download it. I think that's kind of slick myself, but I'm easily amused. Compared to Mimo (which I tried a long while ago) this search is alot better imo.

Anyway, like any search engine I guess I just eventually tailor my queries to "what works" for that particular search.

I took another look at it, the results are coming in by most recent. My mindset is the most popular results should be first (like any web search engine).

This doesn't change the fact that if I search, for example, "newsgroup newbie guide" and get a few results. Yet, if I search with "newsgroup john doe" I now get many results with all the words such as "newsgroup.newbie.guide-john.doe". To me the first search should have listed that same result.

I also cannot figure out how to change to binsearch.info. Under options there is a green check mark next to newshosting, and nothing next to binsearch.

Many separate search and provider from each other. Possibly you got the wrong idea by the all in one that newshosting is giving you. For example, with Binsearch...if you visit »binsearch.info you will be able to search regardless of which news provider you are using. Same with »nzbmatrix.com and so on and so forth. They will simply give you NZB files which you would open in one of the many newsreaders you can use and download away.

EDIT- Oops...didnt realize Binsearch is integrated right into the app too...sorry.

Well...again. I think it's your expectations that are not right. Not all search engines work like you think.
I'm no expert but I'm pretty sure they are matching on words that can be anywhere in the post. Like the file name of the attachment or the poster name or the type of post. So having the same results with a different search is something I would *not* expect.

You simply click the little spyglass thing in the search bar and choose Binsearch.

Maybe try using some of the search filters. What I do is search on a broad term first, like "Star Voyage S01" and then use the "Video" filter to find just videos. Or if you know a group you like that has stuff in it, use the drop down to filter only on that one group. Like alt.binaries.teevee and then hit go again. That helps me get rid of alot of crap. Anyway, like I said earlier, I've had really pretty good success with this app. You might too if you fiddle with it some more. Good luck!

Ah, that's how the binsearch works within the client.

You should join Newshosting support ...

That search tool is basically tied to the binsearch.info API availability - this feature is entirely dependent on their end, and we provide the search tool as a convenience only. If you are having trouble with the search tool in the client, you will need to head to their site directly to preform the search. Please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns.
That's the reply I got when I asked the same question on how to get Binsearch to work. Thanks for your tip. I wonder why the options menu is useless for changing the search as people think it's broken without realizing there's a switch on the main UI. Very user unfriendly.

lol don't know about that.

Not sure if anyone is following this thread anymore but I found another cool way of filtering crap. On the left are the bookmarked groups - which you can add to at will. If you click on one of them, like a.b.teevee, and then in the lower right corner of the screen there's some binoculars. If you click the binoculars, it opens a dialog that allows for some pretty specific searching within a newsgroup. Like file size, only files with nfo, date range of post.

I can't tell you how many files I've found now with that feature. They should probably call it out more somehow...it's pretty useful for me anyway.

Searching for the actual file name and not the release name with Mysterbin will get you what you want. Mysterbin searches inside of archives, like rar's. Even if Usenet post groups hide their releases with obfuscation, Mysterbin will find it. For raw search, it is the one I use first. Binsearch.info is a close second. NZBClub.com shows activity for files listed and also is a good search engine.
