 SSA1978 join:2011-12-28 Cambridge, MA | RV042 VPN Setup Hi,
I'm trying to setup a VPN network in my home so i purchase a Cisco RV042. I have Comcast as my internet provider. The Gateway is a Scientific Atlantic DPC2203C2 and my router is a Dlink DGL-4300.
I plugged the Gateway into the RV042 WAN1 port. From one of the LAN ports in the RV042 I have it connected to a LAN port on my Dlink.
The Dlink has an IP Address of 192.168.0.1 and is the DHCP server. The RV042 has an IP Address of 192.168.0.200. I'm able to get the RV042 to get a WAN address (»dl.dropbox.com/u/37913797/RV042.bmp)
Question is I once I do this I can't get internet on my LAN again. I'm not sure what I am doing wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

I would say what purpose it the DLINK serving. Get rid of it. The gateway (your modem) is attached to your Crisco (router). Why do you want to stick another router into the mix??
The RV is quite capable of being your dhcp server and VPN device. -- Ain't nuthin but the blues! "Albert Collins". Leave your troubles at the door! "Pepe Peregil" De Sevilla. Just Don't Wifi without WPA, "Yul Brenner"

Turn off the DHCP server in the DLINK and turn on the DHCP server in the RV042. |

SSA1978 join:2011-12-28 Cambridge, MA | I've tried that but I'll give it another shot.
Here are the steps I plan on taking. 1. Turn off DHCP on the DLink 2. Turn on DHCP on the RV042 3. Power down all 4. Power on Gateway, wait a minute 5. Power on RV042, wait a minute 6. Power on Dlink 7. Cross fingers
I've read in some cases that I have to do some forwarding or routing. Is this true? |

| reply to SSA1978 Not sure about any port forwarding, only because you haven't really defined what it is you'll be doing. As far as the DHCP piece is concerned, after you have turned it off on the DLINK and then turned it on in the RV042, just restart one of your PC's. You should also have one connected directly to the RV042 as well for a "sanity" check. |

Sounds like a routing / double NAT issue. As others have said, test connectivity with just your ISP and the RV042 only, and go from there.

SSA1978 join:2011-12-28 Cambridge, MA | Things don't seem to be working. This time i took the Dlink out of the equation. It is not powered on.
This is what I did: 1. Unplugged the Dlink Router entirely (i'm now running a wired network) 2. Set the RV042 as the DHCP server 3. Plugged a PC into the RV042 lan port 4.
The RV042 has a WAN ip address but I still have no internet on the PC that is direct wired into a LAN port on the RV042. This is driving me a nuts.
Question: Do I have to manually set the DNS Server IP address in the RV042. It says required? |

aguenPremium join:2003-07-16 Lewisville, TX | reply to SSA1978 Can you login to the RV042 admin web page? If so, does this routers WAN indicate that it has a public IP address or a private address? During the changeover from the dlink to the rv did you power off the modem? |

SSA1978 join:2011-12-28 Cambridge, MA | It just started working. I changed the mode to gateway rather than router and it worked.
Thank you everyone for your help. Now I've got to get the VPN to work. |
