[SWTOR] Thoughts and the Future

Massively has had some interesting articles over the last few weeks concerning SW:TOR. The actual launch, what the future will hold for it (and of course some healthy speculation of what the year 2012 will hold for MMO's in general), subscriber numbers, sales, and of course some ego pandering on behalf of Bioware.

Overall the consensus seems to be that SW:TOR does a lot of things right, a few things wrong, and has plenty in the area of improvement. With that said however it also seems to be the consensus that it has had one of the smoothest launches of any MMO, a high level of polish, and in the grand scheme of things, relatively bug free game play. That doesn't change the fact that there are issues, many people calling them out on UI, poor performance, optimization issues, and so on.

So, in an effort to make my day go a bit more quickly and to provide me with something to do, I pose a few questions:

What do you think about SW:TOR in general?
What did you think about SW:TOR's launch?
What do you think about SW:TOR's longevity?
What improvements would you like to see brought to game?
What features (if any) would you like to see removed?

they need to fix the ability lag, thats gamebreaking and will absolutely halt any form of competitive PvP. Ill hit my aoe knockback with 2-3 people around me, then 3 seconds later it goes off, after enemies are already out of range of it.

launch was solid in terms of server stability, but a fair amount of bugs made it though beta(not being able to finish your class quest is unacceptable). Glad they added more servers, 2 hour queues were not fun.
It has enough different things to advance to have good longevity, So many different gear grinds to get through.

They need UI customization badly, my 2 bottom action bars are already completely full, with several new skills to come as i level. I need moddable action bars, at the very least.

Id like to see some more diverse boss abilities. Mostly all ive seen is bosses with adds, and bosses with aoe/auras.

The only thing id like to see removed, is the absurd amount of knockback abilities in the game.

Love it.

What did you think about SW:TOR's launch?
Despite being on one of the most populated servers, the queues were and have been manageable. Server uptime was great and there were no gamebreaking bugs.
quote:
What do you think about SW:TOR's longevity?
I see no problems with SWTOR lasting many years. The IP is a proven winner and Bioware has a proven track record of producing great games. There is a huge amount of content that they can and will add, be it through the Legacy system, content patches, and expansions.

What improvements would you like to see brought to game?
The guild chat/party chat bug that happens all the time. The galaxy map bug that comes from being in a group and unable to select a destination. A smartphone app for crew skills. Co-op space battles. Guild capital ship/bank. Resolve being worth a shit.

Not really removed, but left out: anything that contributes to gearscore silliness, extreme modability.

So far I've been having a lot of fun. Not once have I got the feeling of bordom or anything.

Gearing out your companions is nice little feature that I'm not used to. It definately adds some more flavor into the mix.

Server queues are getting down to 10-15min now. Which isn't bad.

A couple gripes I have right now....

We seriously need a Target of Target option. It's annoying not having that.

Can we get larger enemy cast bars??? For christ sakes, you can barely even notice when they are casting something at you.

Can we get the option to turn off all enemy target debuffs besides my own, please?? I always used this option in WoW and it was a golden feature when raiding. Seeing 3 of the exact same dots on my target and not knowing which one is mine, is lame.

This is fun and engaging, I have not had the feeling of needing to rush through to enjoy the game since the journey is so much fun.
What did you think about SW:TOR's launch?
Disk didn't work, pretty po'd about that, so I had to dl the game. 2 hours on hold with customer support to verify and flag my account as having the problems sucked. Too many servers with a queue, though this is both good and bad
What do you think about SW:TOR's longevity?
This will depend. So far there is a good foundation, but they need to complete some of the finish work (see below). This is in BioWare's hands right now. If they become stagnant and wait to see profits before pushing work, this will flop, but if they continue to invest in the game, taking parts from other MMOs with the thought that "payday" won't occur till much later, then they are on the right track.
What improvements would you like to see brought to game?
Minimal mods, ability to track buffs, debuffs, heals. UI improvemts, or modifications.
What features (if any) would you like to see removed?
Nothing yet, but there is still a ways to go for me to play.

** I am not very far in the game. This is mainly a first impressions response from myself. Take it as you will.

What do you think about SW:TOR in general?

It's good, I played SWG, and I’m playing this. It is fun so far, however, I'm still in the early stages of game play so cannot speak too much. They have paid more attention to the little details than any MMO to launch to date since WoW, and for that they get a huge pat on the back, but they still stopped short in many areas (one specific example is character animations, are still not where they should be)... they should focus on cleaning up those things before they add new content. They have easily 3-5 months of heavy polish still required for good longevity.

What did you think about SW:TOR's launch?

It was very good, and I agree with the level of polish and for the most part the bug-free play. I’ve only hit queues on my server (GMZ), a couple times.

What do you think about SW:TOR's longevity?

Too early to say for me at this point, but thus far, I easily see 3-4 months of casual play for me at this point. The key will be how entertaining it gets later in the game as the play style shifts from leveling to end game grinds, and how much more they polish the game in release.

What improvements would you like to see brought to game?

They have a LOT of overhauling they need to do on the UI, before they do anything else. The vendors are craptastic, convoluted, and darn near incompressible. The UI is needs some more flexibility (granted I haven't explored it much) I'm much more casual nowadays and don't want to invest much time in figuring how to set-up what seems like more buttons than the UI can handle.

They need to work on streamlining the education process for players… I did not play the beta and I did not follow the game before release (by choice), so things many ‘old timers’ now take for granted someone new to this realm is at a HUGE disadvantage, unless they spend 1-3 hours reading fan sites, on top of that at this point most of the fan sites information is pure garbage, they should have had a PR person nudging the sites to remove their old content at release… having to sort through beta vs. release vs. conjecture is a big PITA… and doesn’t help the games longevity. (IMO)

What features (if any) would you like to see removed?

In the warpoint where you shoot the cannons at the drop ships, the entry level speeder run is completely useless and a pure waste of time, they should cut that out and just let people spawn at the starting point. The FIRST time I saw it, it was nice to get a lay of the land but now is just a pure waste... just little things like that are bugging me… not sure about any core feature, but they need to work on reducing clutter there it a lot of it from vendors, to skills, to talents, etc.

That’s all I have for now

Alt + T simply changes your target to your target's target, so yes, in practice there is target of target, but when we say target of target I think we're leaning towards an actual secondary frame.

What do you think about SW:TOR in general?
It's a good midway progressed beta.

What did you think about SW:TOR's launch?
Technical aspect was smooth, it's EA so it was obviously rushed.

What do you think about SW:TOR's longevity?
A year.

What improvements would you like to see brought to game?
Fix the god damn ability lag.
Fix the instance balance.
Cut down on the amount of servers and beef up on what you have already. I'm on a pvp server and I saw one republic the whole time.
Add in Diminishing Returns in pvp.
Optimize the graphics engine. This thing looks like everquest.
Fix the misc world bugs I've reported 5 months ago in beta.
Misc memory leak fixes.
Mac client.
Combat log and parsing abilities.
...oh damn it. uh, sell back to vendor for token on purple gear. I made a mistake.

What features (if any) would you like to see removed?
Things need added, not removed.

But anyhow, the datacron hunt series is really amazing. Too bad 95% of the population is not going to do them.

SWTOR is a great game. I love the voice acting and the storyline aspect of the game. I am only level 21, but so far I am enjoying the game.

The launch was flawless aside for some very long queue times. Now, my queues are only about 10 minutes at peak times.

The longevity remains to be seen. A lot will depend on the endgame. I am not a raider, so as long as they keep developing the PvP and introduce world PvP events, I will be happy.

As for improvements, I would like to see improvements in the AH as well as working towards making the PvP experience more varied. Huttball is fun, but what about additional PvP instances? There have got to be more that they can implement. What about the endgame PvP? Gotta wonder what that will be like as the game continues to evolve.

As for features removed, nothing at this time.

What did you think about SW:TOR's launch?
relatively smooth, on an rp-pvp server so no queue qq here

What do you think about SW:TOR's longevity?
cant answer that yet but hoping for the best

What improvements would you like to see brought to game?
-GTN interface
-more responsive targeting or tab targeting
-pvp bugs
-moddable UI
-no future Random Dungeon, or cross server lfg(personal opinion)
-allow a veryveryvery small amount of 3rd party addons, maybe a combat parser and action bar mods...please NO deadly boss mods(again personal opinion)

What features (if any) would you like to see removed?

What do you think about SW:TOR in general?

Im having a lot of fun with it right now. I hope it lasts.

What did you think about SW:TOR's launch?

While not a fan of staggering the EGA, all in all it was a good smooth launch.

What do you think about SW:TOR's longevity?

I could see it saying around for a long while as long as they continue to add and improve the game and gameplay.

What improvements would you like to see brought to game?

A better UI, or at least some options to customize it. Movable windows and frames. I cant count how many times I have something, like class skills, open that overlap to the action bars and get in the way.

What features (if any) would you like to see removed?

One thing I would like to see is the removal of loot drops, quest items not included, from gray mobs. What I mean by this is, take Drummond Kaas for example. There are a number of Champion Named Mobs on that planet. Having to go back there for class quests at 32(ish), I figured I would pick up all the datacrons while I was there. For giggles, I killed several of the Champions I ran across. Every named Champion dropped loot. Not just useless gray fodder, but blue, purple and orange gear. Not only will this encourage farming of said mobs for low level loot, but should someone want to actually want to kill these at the appropriate level, being contested mob they might not be up.

And maybe, some actual rarity to the Orange drops. Ive seen 3 or 4 just killing quest mobs. I dont want to sound elitest, but with the current drop rates & availability of high quality gear, at least through 34 levels, has made acquiring it slightly less meaningful.

@nayuta.nl

The game is good and while like all MMOs it will lose people after the first month, this game will keep a healthy population and last a long time.

Launch was good, not the smoothest there's been - optimisation issues, UI problems, long server queues, dodgy performance. I think, regardless of peoples opinion of the game overall, Rift had the smoothest launch I have ever experienced - after games like EQ1, EQ2, WoW, Vanguard, Rifts launch blew me away.

Longetivity should be good for the game, however I do have concerns:
1) The story is what makes this game stand out from any other, while each class has its own story, the side quests you get will be much the same when playing through the game with alts which means the best aspect of the game will be missing when replaying. This is not a huge deal because it's still better than alts in other games.

2) Game updates. Nowadays players like frequent updates to keep their attention, new things added almost monthly. I would expect updates to be a lot trickier with SWTOR due to the voice overs and all the different stroylines for each class, it will be ALOT of work and may be a real struggle.

3) End game. With story being the main difference between SWTOR and other MMOs, how does the end game not feel the same as any other at the end? Once your story quest is finished and you are waiting for updates for more story, what stops the game from being like any other raid orientated MMO?

Ultimately I think thegames greatest strength will also be it's biggest weakeness. Not to say it is a big problem, the game is good, even taking the story away so it can still work like any other MMO, it's just I know a number of people who play because of the story and once that dries up I wonder how many will get bored and disappointed

What do you think about SW:TOR in general?

Mass Effect + MMO + in Star Wars galaxy.

What did you think about SW:TOR's launch?

Superb. Certainly the smoothest out of the big MMO releases in probably the last 10 years.

What do you think about SW:TOR's longevity?

6 Months. No end game content (from what I've been reading everywhere, it's pretty anemic) no subs. Unless they add content in about 2 months, I don't see people sticking around. Story is nice, but you can only do that so much before your friends are calling you over to the other game...

Speaking of which, if the stars align nicely for GW2, THAT may be the game to get. Still way too early on anything, just speculating.

What improvements would you like to see brought to game?

End game content. UI and all the other stuff one can do with out(LOTRO's ui is still pretty bad and limited but people still play). Content is king, always has been.

What features (if any) would you like to see removed?

Nothing really. The games need additions, there's nothing that developers need to be pried from in order to take stuff out of the game.

SWTOR's greatest threat right now is D3. And if you don't think Blizzard is looking to release that game right when the first 30 day free trials are ending, you haven't been following Blizz very well.

Actually D3 will bolster SWTOR. People will take a short break to play D3 which will give SWTOR time to get some end game content done so when those people return the game is ready to play. I don't see any threat to SWTOR or WoW right now. They are both going to do well on their own. The only contender to either is Blizzard's new MMORPG in development.

What I find interesting, thus far, is that as far as longevity goes there are wildly different guesses and opinions, but by far the most interesting part is people saying there is little or no end game yet they don't know themselves.

Mike is the only one in this thread I know of that is level capped, so I mean we can always see what he says but for those saying it doesn't exist and so on, I've been seeing a lot (and I mean a shit ton) of positive feed back for Eternium Vault specifically.

Bioware also released a video...last week I believe, though it could have been very early this week, that talked about future content and supposedly (because we know how shit like this works) within the first month of release (so before January 20th) there will be a content patch that will add another Flash Point (or perhaps it was an Operation) to the game that is supposedly massive as all get out.

Anyway, point I was trying to make is that there is a massive amount of doom calling concerning end game from people that are parroting what they've heard. I find this fascinating.
