HDMI Audio, GTX 570, XP vs. Windows 7?

I made a new build, Windows 7 XP x64 on an Asus P8P67 Deluxe (using the built in audio) and an eVGA GTX 570 board. I plugged the HDMI cable into my monitor, and was surprised to hear audio; it's new to me that the cards handle the audio routing [Well, I'm assuming it's routing the audio and not somehow doing audio from the video board, right?]

So, I ended up having to make an XP dual boot, and after downloading and installing all drives/etc, I noticed I do not get any sound over HDMI [all hardware the same; same monitor...]. I have to use the audio out jacks.

So, my question: Why doesn't it work in XP? Simply "not supported" or something else?

What is "Windows 7 XP x64"?

What exactly is your problem? Are you using speakers integrated into your monitor?

Ugh, sorry I mean Windows 7 x64 [x64 = 64 bit]. For some reason When I type windows, I automatically type "XP" after it, force of habit.

I'm curious as to why I get audio out over the HDMI connection in Windows 7, but no audio out over HDMI in Windows XP.

So you're using HDMI to connect to a monitor/LCD with integrated speakers? I'm guessing Win7 implementation of audio/video drivers. You can't carry audio over DVI (that I know of) so WinXP probably sees both as the same and pushes only video to a DVI/HDMI output.

That's my uneducated conjecture.

AFAIK, the nVidia driver provides the support for HDMI audio - if you look in your device manager, you'll see it listed as NVIDIA High Definition Audio on your Win 7 install.

Perhaps you didn't install the full nVidia driver package on XP? The HD audio driver is listed as part of the package:
