Webhosting advice

I`m wanting to register a domain name and start a personal website. Really only for personal needs and no e-commerce. I may want to try out Joomla or Wordpress etc. Eventually may want SQL support etc. I dont expect high bandwidth or any large file hosting. Just images, text and smaller files under 20mb.

Something is leading me towards Godaddy with the domain registration but i know there has to be better hosting options? Maybe even a registrar + hosting one stop solution?

Avoid GoDaddy like the plague. They're filthy in almost every aspect of what they do.

DreamHost is a one stop shop for everything you mentioned, they are affordable, and an upstanding outfit. I have my personal stuff with them, and several other organizations as well. And, while it's self serving, it helps you too: if you use my promo code of JAAULDE you'll get a free domain registration and 10% off a prepaid 1 or 2 year account.

You'll get a million hosting suggestions. If you think you'll use WordPress then they have suggestions for hosts, though I don't know if they pay for that privilege. We use HostGator and are very happy with it.

Look into namecheap for registration. People will jump in here about GoDaddy's recent spat with something called SOPA and domains are leaving GoDaddy by the tens of thousands. It's web site is a spam filled mess and the president is also an African elephant killer. But don't let me disuade you by all that.

Do not register your domain with the same company you want to host it with. Instead, as howardfine posted, I would register the domain with namecheap.com, then find a host

As far as the host, that's up to you. Since you're looking to start a personal website, I'd look for something really cheap, such as dreamhost.com.

Stay away from GoDaddy. I've had problems with them. I host my domains at MyDomain.com without any problems.

Another vote for Namecheap.com for domain registration. I haven't had any problems with their service for the last 5 years.

I have registered hosting from »www.bmchosting.com for my Joomla and WordPress websites and I don't have any complain. I'm using it since last 4 years.
