| Sync No Surf Issues Normally I get this issue once in a great while, but today I had to reboot my Speedstream 4100 modem three times in less than an hour to reconnect. My setup is a custom desktop with Windows 7 64 bit loaded with only the modem as that is the only computer I have. Is there a problem on the network side (DHCP server)? I see on DSL Reports there is no cause explained but only the solution on how to fix it (rebooting modem/router). Can DSLX techs/GM explain what causes sync no surf?
Thanks! |

dslx_nick join:2011-12-24 Chatsworth, CA kudos:11 | There are different causes for sync no surf, so... at a glance, no. We'd need to pull up your account and take a look at the current settings and numbers to see what's going on in your case specifically.
To put it VERY simply: the most common reason for sync no surf is if your computer is not receiving a unique IP. This can occur if the IP is being assigned to someone else, for example. Or if your connection isn't being properly provisioned and built on our servers. Or if your computer is failing to request an IP properly. Or if your computer is configured to use a different (static) IP than the one being assigned (dynamically) to it. Or if you have a PPPoE connection and your system's credentials aren't authenticating. Or... well, you get the idea.
It's also pertinent whether you're actually running into a sync no surf issue, or perhaps having a problem with sync itself. If your sync gets disrupted momentarily, that 'hiccup' can leave you with a situation much like what you're describing (after which, rebooting the modem or the computer is usually sufficient to pull down a fresh IP). Many sync no surf causes will cause continuous connection failure that isn't resolved by rebooting your modem... so the fact that rebooting your modem fixes the issue, makes it quite likely that it may simply be a sync issue.
If you want to PM me your account info, I can have a tech look into that for you. |

1 edit | I had an IP address every time I could not surf. I pinged the gateway with no response. I then rebooted the modem and the connection came back. I checked this by pinging the gateway again. I am troubleshooting by using my old Speedstream 5360 modem. Will report back the results. |

| It was IP 68.183.199.87 with my Speedstream 4100 modem that I had sync no surf issues on December 30. I have not lost a connection with my Speedstream 5360 modem. Could it be the 4100 modem getting bad? I bought another 4100 on eBay yesterday. I will try that one next week when it comes in. I did not PM anyone since I have not heard any complaints from other users. I figured it was my problem. |

dslx_nick join:2011-12-24 Chatsworth, CA kudos:11 | I just pulled up your account info. We ARE seeing traffic pass through, but just a little bit; basically, just enough to keep the connection alive. The IP you listed is definitely the one we assigned to you, and I'm able to ping you from our server; at this point, I'd start checking things like making sure your computer doesn't have a bad proxy set, make sure you don't have multiple overlapping firewalls, etc. I'll have a tech get in touch with you regarding this to help troubleshoot. |

| I just have Windows 7 Firewall, default settings. Just the modem and one desktop computer. What is strange is I had no problems with my original Speedstream 5360 that I have had for around 10 years. I have the 4100 set up in Bridge mode. I pinged my gateway 100 pings and averaged 7 ms. Has anyone else had trouble with the 4100 as I have? |
