W.O.W. Latency issues SE Michigan DOCSIS 3.0 HELP!

I recently upgraded (around 4 weeks ago) to the 30/3 DOCSIS 3.0 services. I purchased the Motorola SB6121. For the first few weeks all was well so it seemed.

But this past 7 days, major latency issues have been noticed. Best way to explain is that my connection lags out for 5-10 seconds every 40 seconds to 2 mins intravels. In pc games, watching netflix, xbox live, upload work stuff, etc across any device on this connection. I didn't really notice it until i started using these services as Im a small home business owner and haven't really had time to play games or even watch tv with Christmas and all.

I called in to WOW tech support and went through the normal stuff. They can not see any issues.

Previously I have had WOW 20/2 and a DOCSIS 2.0 modem and it was flawless for about 2 years. The only thing that has changed in my network was the modem. All my wiring is new from the line to the devices within 1 year. Levels look good on the modem and the routers and switches have been checked.

What should I be looking at! I'm at the end of wanting to deal with this and might have to go back (sigh) to Comcast as I need a solid connection to work with.

If you'd like me to look at your modem from my end, send me your account number or phone number on the account and I can tell you if I see anything that might cause a problem.

Well i paid for 15/2 but I got 20/2 for 2 years, thanks for wasting your time though

Thanks Dan will do. I recently swapped out the modem (was still under its 30 day return policy) to make sure, ordered a new router as well. Needless to say this is driving me nuts. I see many others having this "pause" issue in SE MI.

Since you read these forums, you know how to test for packet loss right?

packet loss is 0% and other times is 5% loss.

I can see my signals are all within range 35dB SNR and the power is right on.

When it works its perfect.

Well the "pause" you describe is almost certainly packet loss. I guess you need to prove it's not the router by removing it entirely (temporarily for now) if WOW_Dan doesn't see anything obviously wrong with the modem. There should be enough info and tools mentioned in this discussion for you to get started and track the problem down:

sorry but the modem is provisioned for just above 15 down so there is no way you could have pulled 20 down. Nice try though.

Many people get more then rated speeds. Docsis 2 modem can get 20/2 so why couldn't his? troll harder in the new year.

Matt_MI disregard rude users.

Have you swapped out the router? My mom is having the same issues in SE MI on wow. No disconnect just a pause every few seconds. Got her a new web connected tv and the online videos on it started doing this and I traced it back to the modem or router. Please inform us of this outcome. I'm using a linksys flashed with DD-WRT and a SB6121. Which router are you using? Go wings!

Yes Docsis 2 can get 20/2 but thats not the point. WOW provisions the modems to just a tad higher than the advertised cap, but not 5 mbps above. lol. When I had the 15/2 I could get almost 16mbps on a good day but its not going higher than what its provisioned for soooooo.... yeah..

Yeah I'm used to "those kinds of people" so no worries, lol.

I have the SB6121 and a Buffalo router flashed with DD-WRT as well.

Dan has said my signal looks better then most so it might be a router issue,I also have a few switches to checkout. Ill report back Tuesday when the router comes in. Trying out the TP-LINK TL-WR1043ND and going to flash DD-WRT on it,then if that's not a fix, then I'm going to swap the main switch.

I don't know but it does seem like a regional issue on these forums and some of my gaming forums I browse. Many people reporting that it has gotten really bad in the past several days like mine. I asked them to report the issues here so Dan can see a larger sample and maybe look into it further.

You can try this since you are using dd-wrt. I've seen it cure many weird problems on these forums... whether that is due to a simple misconfiguration, crappy programming, running out physical or corrupted nvram flash memory... they are all probably true eventually.

I'm a bit surprised to see any kind packet loss at all from your dd-wrt router (even if its only 4 packets in 898). How is the computer you are running WinMTR connected to the router?

What happens if you run WinMTR against your modem, which should have an ip address of 192.168.100.1 ?

Superficially, I'd say this shows packet loss very near to your modem, and it needs to be fixed by WOW. However, I think you should investigate your router and/or network gear more. Just as an example, I've had no problem pinging my dd-wrt router and modem for days on end and not dropping a single packet.

here we are directly to the modem. Tried it on multiple computers. same results

like i said its not a steady issue. It happens randomly through the day. it was pretty solid most of today the times i used it then went to garbage around 9pm

For future reader. Docsis 3.0 upgrade Dec 1st 2011. Worked perfect until Dec 23rd. Then started suffering RANDOM TIMES OF lag/packet loss. So far I have inspected the cable line up to the pole ( as far as i could see, grab) tested/ reset multiple equipment. swapped new modems, directly connected modem to multiple pcs, and have the same results of packet loss. My signal levels are solid. Techs confirm signal strength is good.Motorola Surfboard 6121 is the modem. SE Michigan

and a little later. Dont mean to spam my thread just want to put out as much info as I can before I have to make a move to downgrade to 15/2 on a docsis 2 modem, or if they dont let me back on that plan, make the horrible move to comcast docsis 3 services. Need the upload speeds for work stuffs. The more i search around the net the more i see WOW and docsis 3 issues like mine without a fix. Im worried!
