 | What can make such a loud pop sound to come from the UPS I was just using my computer then suddenly the current had gone and my computer was still ON because of my UPS, then i shut down my computer and also turned OFF the main button of my PC but i didnt turn off my UPS it was working in battery mode and suddenly there was a loud pop sound from my ups (doesnt sound to be a relay sound) as if something got burst inside for sure, then for around 10 mins i was getting some burning smell from my UPS I never turned it On back What could be the cause |
|
 | i created this topic using my cellphone, so cant post the full messages
cont... actually i am not 100% sure that the sound has really come from my UPS but i guess so because it was only my UPS which was turned ON, but also note that the LED below my monitor screen was also ON but no display as i had shut down my PC because of power failure, the incidence took place after few mins
Is this very serious or replacing the UPS will solve everything |

|
 | reply to Sachin Naik also note after this happened i never turned ON my PC back, i am completely away from my PC, really scared about it. I created this topic using my cellphone took an hour
of course i will be calling a technician but i have to wait for 3 days
now i am still not 100% sure that this loud pop sound came from my ups only but i say so because it was only my ups which was turned ON and my monitor only had an amber light below because of the turned ON UPS |

 | reply to Sachin Naik I agree with psafux.
If your computer was still plugged in to your ups you shouldn't assume it was the ups. You have to determine where the failure actually occurred.
The first thing I would do is disconnect the computer from the ups. You can probably use your nose to determine where the problem is but you need to separate the items and move them to a different location so you aren't picking up residual smells from the room or from having the computer and the ups too close together. So, for example, take the ups into another room and stick your nose around it. Then do the same with the computer, especially around the power supply fan and opening the case and looking at the motherboard for scorching, visual signs of failure, or the burning smell. Smoke smells of this kind tend to linger for quite a while so you can probably get a pretty good idea of which component is the culprit by doing this. Again though you don't just want to keep the computer and ups in close proximity while you do this, or in the room where the failure occurred, or your nose could be misled. |
|
 | Let us know if you get any strong indications from doing this. Don't try to fight your nose because you want the problem to be one thing rather than another:) |
|
 | reply to asdfdfdfdfdf Also I would stick my nose around the monitor vents. |

 | reply to asdfdfdfdfdf Thanks a lot lot lot for your reply
ok so i opened my cabinet to see my motherbord, all the components seems to be fine, they are not cracked nor burnt like. But the strange thing is that almost all the capacitors have a green colour spot only on their tops, Just because of this i went to see my old motherboard though it is totally dead, none of its capacitors have such green spots on its top. My new boards name is gigabyte only 3 yrs old was running very fine everyday |
|
 | reply to asdfdfdfdfdf note i am using my cellphone to type these messages so i have to break them into small parts
cont... i have not opened my ups nor my psu because i am scared, but they dont smell now because the incidence has already taken place yesterday
is my motherboard safe could it be the reason for that pop sound, and as i told you my pc was already shut down by me before the sound, only my ups was ON in battery mode and then went OFF automatically after the loud pop sound, but my pc was plugged to my ups |
|
 | reply to asdfdfdfdfdf another thing as far as the smell is concerned, i brought my nose closer to almost every part motherborad, wires, monitor, ups, psu they dont smell anymore
it was only yesterday during the sound i could have figured out from where the smell was actually coming from, but i was so scared that i had to even move away from the room after unplugging all the plugs, i was getting the smell close by the ups and pc but dont know from where actually |

Tursiops_GTechnoidPremium,MVM join:2002-02-06 Norwalk, CT | At this point, I would remove the UPS entirely, and connect the PC and monitor directly to the AC outlet, power them up, and see if it powers up normally... I'm willing to bet that the PC and Monitor are fine, and that it's only the UPS itself that has failed...
What is the make & model of the UPS, and how old is it?

 | the ups is 5 yrs old, its battery was replaced this year Accura 600VA is the model
now if ups is the fault the technician will ask me whether to repair it or to replace it, so which option do you think is better repairing or replacing
Actually here at my place the technicians do not care for their customers, they are very busy and dont like to enter others houses, so i have to be prepared with my answer now only before he comes |
|
 | reply to Sachin Naik "strange thing is that almost all the capacitors have a green colour spot only on their tops"
Unless there is sign of bulging or it looks like corrosion I wouldn't focus on that.
We can't give you definitive answer. It sounds like it is probably your ups that is the problem but I think you are going to have to do as tursiops said and remove the ups and try powering up the machine connected directly to an ac outlet. If the machine won't power on or there is any electrical burn smell or popping sounds then immediately turn it off and track down where the smell is coming from. The other alternative is to wait for the technician and let him do it. I'm sorry we can't help more but we can't be certain based on what you have said so far.
As far as repair or replacement of the ups, if that turns out to be the problem, I would choose replace. I don't think they would be making likely repairs in the field for something like this anyway. |

| reply to Sachin Naik said by Sachin Naik:almost all the capacitors have a green colour spot only on their tops there's a good chance that green color is just from a green sharpie... quality inspectors seem to like marking things they look at. (I've seen this on many, many components)
IOW, if the capacitors are not bulging at the top or leaking fluid (brownish), there's really nothing much to look for. -- My Site |

Tech. says UPS coil is burnt, nothing else Since the technician was busy he told me to get the ups, he phoned me and told there is nothing much to worry its just a coil which is burnt he will replace it and give me. And he is so busy that i couldnt ask him about the motherboard and psu, because i have heard in many sites that a powersupply can cause any type of confusion
so after a day he will return the ups
and i will have to just take it home and switch my computer back ON with the ups and i hope there wont be another blast, I am really scared |
|
 | I still think, before you connect the computer up to a ups, you need to connect it without a ups and power it up to make sure that it is working properly and there a no signs of problems. |
|
 | I sense that you are uncomfortable about trying to run the machine at all without the ups. Is the electrical service in your area of such low quality that you are concerned about even testing your machine for a short time without the ups? |
|
 | CPU (motherboard/power supply) doesnt turn ON at all oh no! i did what you said i have still not received my ups from the technician i will get it tomorow.
i connected my cabinet (containing the motherboard) directlty without the ups to the mains but it doesnt turn ON, and also note i have not connected my monitor, its only the cpu i have tested, i mean the motherboard so it doesnt work The board doesnt show any burnt signs nor the capacitor shows any bulge or brownish liquid, its only the green mark what i can see on every capacitor |

Re: What can make such a loud pop sound to come from the UPS not a single sign of working, no lights, no fans nothing |
|
 | It sounds like your computer's power supply is shot.
You want to double check that the electrical socket you plugged it into is, in fact, working by plugging something else, like a lamp, into it. It is possible that a fuse was blown/circuit breaker was thrown. If you are sure that the socket is working and you aren't getting anything at all from the computer, not even fans spinning up, then your tech guy will probably have to replace the power supply in your machine.
Let us know what the technician concludes. |
