[AT&T] How sim cards work?

I have always been on verizon and don't know squat about att and sims

My Mom and Sister are both on att
(And 2000 miles away)
I want to send my Ma one of the big button plain jane phones
My Sister is concerned she will have to reprogram the new phone

Am I right that the sim card has all speed dial and contacts on it?
Shouldn't she just swap sim and new phone will immediately work same as previous?
Like speed dial etc

She has a dumb phone now so just swapping one dumb phone for another att compatible dumb phone

Yes, swapping the existing SIM into the new phone will move the account. The new phone will be able to make and receive calls.

The names and numbers can be stored in the SIM, or in the phone. There are menu settings for choosing the default location (I choose SIM, for portablility). Because Subscriber Identity Modules are old technology, the SIM's phone book holds only names and telephone numbers.

If the names and numbers are stored in the phone, they can be copied into the SIM. There will be a menu option to do this. A current SIM phonebook can hold 250 entries for names and numbers; an old SIM may hold fewer, perhaps 100 or 64.

There's a matching menu command to copy from SIM to phone, if desired. Speed dial numbers sound to be phone stored.
