Toy 2-way radios

Okay... the kids got a pair of those toy two way radios for xmas. Short of having to scan from DC to Daylight, is there a way to find out what frequency they use? Looking to mess with the kids by using a GMRS radio (if on the same freq) or by just setting the scanner up to listen.

Or I could plug the freq into my Icom IC-91A and listen in as well. (Can't xmit, since I HIGHLY doubt those lil HT's are in the 2m band.)

Look the model up on the FCC website. It should tell you there what band they are operating on.

I don't think there is a specific model. More like they are just cheapie Chinese toys.

Might be either 49MHz or 27MHz.

If they are legal for the US market there should be an FCC ID number on them somewhere. This is all you need.

Almost all toy hadi talks use these.

All in MHz

They are usually 49MHz.

27MHz used to be common but not so much now.

Do you have a MFJ antenna analyzer? It has a built in frequency counter function. You can find it using that.

About the only thing you can transmit on those freqs is an opened up (MARS/CAP) 6 meter rig.

No.. I wish I did have one... just don't have the coin for one.

I had to figure that they wouldn't put cheapie 2-ways in the GMRS band.

49 and 27 used to be the older R/C frequencies, IIRC.

They only transmitters I have right now are the Icom HT, a Yaesu FT-2900, and a Yaesu FT-101ZD... so I think it would be foolish to buy a radio just to mess with my kids....

Hopefully they don't find my old Motorola Radius SP-10's I have...

"Low Band" generally means "VHF Low", from 30~50MHz.

Low band is like 27.49Mc or 35.14Mc, it was used back in the days when men where men and it took one to lift a mobile radio, yes the good old days of mobile radio with the headlight dimming dynamotors and dual 6146’s.

800 Mhz ha, it’s well so microwaveish, almost feminine like, with it’s itsy bitsy little waves that couldn’t light up the darkened florescent tubes in the overhang of a closed for the night gas station, while simultaneously setting off the burglar alarm system, if it tried.

No sir, if you want a real mans communications system you need a quarter wave, bird killing, ceiling slapping antenna mounted to the rear quarter panel of a Plymouth Fury, connected in the trunk to a 100 watt MASTR tuned to 35.14.

Now you are talking communications, sometimes from Miami to LA.

And yes even though the batwings claim you cannot spell garbage without GE, the MASTR was one bullet proof boat anchor and a real ham man about town always had a four channel head, even if he didn’t have eight crystals in his radio.

You ain't had no fun until you drive a 10ft high motorhome with a 40meter whip on the rear ladder under a gas station with a 12ft high shade.

It says in teh description, 31-50, although I doubt it's anywhere near that wide.. Low bands of that era were usually sub banded at about 6 Mhz per band.. ie 30-36, 35-40, ect...

A syntor, humm... did Moto ever get those to work?

You knew you were THE MAN if you had the 4 Ch Scan head.. those were rare, but worked so well, was much easier than turning the knob back & forth.
