[Tech] Stuck with a $75 lens on my 1Dmk2?I recently got a 1Dmk2 and I'm pleasantly surprised by the images that I get with my 19-35mm f/3.5-4.5 Phoenix brand lens.
My only complaint with this combo is that it's not so great in low light. I was looking at the Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 EX DC OS HSM for $630 which would be perfect but it doesn't work with 1.3 crop sensor even though it is a EF mount.
Sure, the Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L would be nice but it's $1300 which is a bit more than I would want to spend.
Is there any other lens that's going to beat my $75 wide angle lens in low light conditions? |

I'm pretty sure the 17-50mm F2.8 EX DC OS HSM is not going to work on the 1D because the lens is designed for APS-C bodies, whereas you have an APS-H body. You'll get vignetting at the wider focal lengths. Not worth it IMO.
Look for a used 16-35 (first version) somewhere. It's not the sharpest in the corners, but now that the Mark II version of it is out you should be able to find a Mark I used for much cheaper. |

Get the sigma 30mm f/1.4. It will be right around the same FOV as a 50mm on a full frame camera and it's great in low light. I always reach for my 35mm f/1.4 canon on the mk4 in low light...never lets me down |

I've had the 19-35mm on the camera almost continuously - I really like those wide angle shots.
The Canon 35mm is too rich for me. The Sigma 30mm is a nice price. |

The sigma 30mm f/1.4 is an aps-c designed lens. You WILL see vignetting on the corners of the frame on aps-h or full frame.
I own both the Sigma's mentioned in this thread and love them both dearly.... except the 17-50 inexplicably broke and Sigma hasn't returned my e-mail. |

Thanks for this Wayne.
Ms. Gaige replied to my email in about 3 minutes. They were closed, as I suspected. |

I found a Canon 17-35mm f/2.8 L for about the same $ that I was planning to spend on the Sigma 17-50.
It's wider and faster and I'm hoping that the IQ will be considerably better than the Phoenix. |

That's a steal for that L... hope it's in good quality! |

Let's just say the Sigma 17-50 costs $600.
The Canon 17-35mm f/2.8L is 4 or generations old now:
17-35mm f/2.8L 16-35mm f/2.8L 17-40mm f/4L 16-35mm f/2.8L II
Or something similar to that. So $650 would be reasonable for that lens used. It's a good lens, too! |

The Phoenix 19-35mm you have is actually made by Cosina or Tamron or Tokina, forget off hand anymore. But they are actually very decent lenses for the cheap price tags!
Maybe find a Sigma 17-35mm f/2.8-4 EX DG ASP HSM, not a DC model for crop sensors. Nice lens too. |
