Sonoma, CA | Frontier DSL + Westell 7500 Bridge Mode = No Internet. Hi all,
I had zero issues running a Frontier DSL modem in bridge mode that connected to my Linksys router (DD-WRT). However, the years-old modem finally quit last week and Frontier game me a new Westell Modem/Router (7500). The Westell works great until I attempt to use it in "bridge mode". When setting in bridge mode the Linksys cannot get a WAN IP from the modem and I have to revert back to "RouterBridge" mode on the Westell to use the web.
I followed these instructions:

Used a different subnet for westell and linksys
Set Westell to bridge mode, disabled dhcp, connected cat cable from westell LAN port to Linksys port.
Rebooted both
Clicked "renew dhcp" multiple times in Linksys
WAN in Linksys usually reports "0.0.0.0" - one time it reported an external WAN address but still no internet connection.
Any suggestions welcome and thanks! |

The public ip address lease must be released before bridging the westell

When the modem is a routed bridge, the modem makes a DHCP request to get a WAN IP. That WAN IP becomes associated with the WAN MAC address of the modem.
When you put the modem into bridge mode (unrouted bridge), the attached linksys router uses its MAC address in a DHCP query.
If your ISP locks you into one IP address for your service, then you either have to wait until the DHCP table entry for the Westell times out, or you have to phone your ISP and ask them to reset the entry so that you can use a different MAC address.
You could try cloning the Westell MAC in the linksys. The difficulty here, is that the only MAC you can find from the Westell's that I have seen is the MAC for the LAN. I have no idea whether the same or a different MAC address is used for the Westell WAN connection.

So it sounds as if my best option is the "release" and then switch to bridge mode just before going to bed? That way, the DHCP would have 8 hrs to assign a new IP?
Thanks again - it was just so easy with my old modem. I literally set it to bridge mode and I was done!  |

The linksys internet connection type must be set to automatic/dhcpsaid by magohn:the DHCP would have 8 hrs to assign a new IP? The westell will display how much time remains on it's public ip address
I think frontier uses 2 hours as the lease time |

Releasing the connection BEFORE switching to bridge mode did the trick. Immediately, the Linksys picked up the IP and Im back to "normal".
