Router working fine until powercycle, then won't connect

I have a Netgear WNR3500L router and a Motorola SB5101 SURFboard cable modem. My provider is Charter Cable. I installed both router and modem within the last year, replacing equipment that was years old. A Charter rep installed the modem, then several days later I installed and configured the router, everything worked fine for months.

Then I started to notice that when starting my desktop, which is connected via ethernet to my router, that it would take 30 seconds or so after starting the browser for the internet connection to become active. My first thought was it had been months since the modem or router had been reset, since they're plugged into a UPS. So I turned everything off for a few minutes, then turned on the modem, waited until it showed it was connected, then turned on the router, then the computer.

Now there's no internet connection to the computer, and I noticed I can connect to the router, but not through the router to the modem. I can get my internet connection back by plugging the ethernet cable directly to the modem.

I'm running WinXP Pro, the cable modem is 192.168.100.1 and the router is 192.168.1.1 I have the router set to not require a logon to my provider, and to obtain a IP address automatically.

I'm not especially knowledgeable with router configuration but was able to get it working originally, with WPA2 encription enabled, and I don't see any settings presently, after the power cycle, which look different.

I'm at a loss as to what to do at this point. If anyone can help I'd really appreciate it. If you have any questions, fire away and I'll answer to the best of my ability.

Thanks!

Power off the modem and your PC.
Disconnect the WNR3500L entirely (network cables, power, everything).
Connect the PC directly to the modem.
Power up the modem and wait until you see the cable sync indicator (assuming that it actually syncs).
Power up the PC, and if necessary, change its network configuration to use DHCP (depending on the OS it may say something like automatically connect instead of DHCP).

If that works, you know that the problem is in the WNR3500L. If it doesn't work, you either have a cable problem or a cable modem problem.

If the above connection worked, next connect the PC to the WNR3500L using an ethernet cable, not a WiFi connection (and leave the WNR3500L disconnected from the cable modem) and then power up the WNR3500L.
Then clone the PC's MAC address into the WNR3500L's WAN (internet) interface.
Next, connect the WNR3500L's WAN (internet) interface to the cable modem.

If you get an internet connection, you can probably just leave the PC's MAC address associated with the WNR3500L and continue surfing the internet. If you still don't have an internet connection using the WNR3500L (but did with only the PC connected), then the WNR3500L is dead (but you may want to at least do a factory default reset and try again before trashing it).

You are not a graduate of network troubleshooting 101.

Thanks! When I posted the original message I had my PC plugged directly into the modem, that was working. The router would respond, and I could navigate it's configuration menus, but as soon as I put it between the PC and the modem, the PC saw no internet connection and I couldn't see the modem anymore when attempting to connect via browser to 192.168.100.1

I believe I did try cloning the mac address too.

Thank you for the advice.

Yesterday I just decided life was too short to be arguing with my router for hours, so I picked up a Cisco-Linksys E3200 and had it running in under 10 minutes. All is well again.
