msmisfit join:2004-09-13 Lawrenceville, GA kudos:1 | New Year Survey on best routers ... currently I think I'm going to have to upgrade my faithful WRT54G to get better speeds, and although I read here daily to keep up on user experiences with latest speed upgrades and modems... I haven't seen a lot on routers. [I'm thinking of upgrading to Plus to increase my cap.]
I need a router that is EASY to set up and use, and hopefully would log *all* traffic for me. Any users with time to share your opinions and experience with me? Ease of use is critical. TIA.... |

| I'm on Plus with a WRT54GL running Tomato and it does a great job. The GL hardware will push up to about 50mbit. Check out smallnetbuilder.com for comparisons on many different models if you want a new one but I would try yours first. Depending on the revision and your usage it might work just fine. |

You shouldn't have a issue, unless you use one of the slower firmwares. It can't handle Ultra tier though. Forgot to mention, I am on plus, and using a wrt54G, and I don't have issues. Speedtests are fine. I would upgrade tier first, then do random speedtests, and then you can see if you want to spend $$$ on a new router. |

BF69Premium join:2004-07-28 Camden, TN | reply to msmisfit I had WRT54GS an I had issues on Plus when it was 18 Mbps at least when using wi-fi. Directly connected it was fine. Switched to a Netgear WNDR3400 last February and speeds were what they were supposed to be. Don't get the new 30 mbps speeds but that's because I'm using a docsis 2.0 modem. That shall be switched out soon. |

msmisfit join:2004-09-13 Lawrenceville, GA kudos:1 | Thanks guys! All this is terrific information!
I'll get the modem switched and try out my router after this encouragement. I don't remember what fw it has, but it's worth a try.
BF is the Netgear any easier to set up than a Linksys, if I have to switch routers? |

Dual Band and 4 gig-e ports. I just bought one of these a few months ago. Flashed with DD-WRT firmware and has been working great! (Although I can't get the channel bonding to work on the 5Ghz channels )
Before purchasing it, I was thinking about the ASUS RT-N56U, but there is no build of DD-WRT firmware for it. |

airshark--... ...-- -.. . -. -.... .-.. -.--Premium join:2003-05-20 Hollister, CA | reply to msmisfit The RT-N56U has been 100% rock solid for three months now. That's pretty impressive considering it's on stock FW. I have several friends that have the same experience. I usually flash my routers to Tomato or DD-WRT, but with this model, I have no need to.
I had a WNDR3700 that I bought at the same time to run a direct comparison. It worked well, but the range and throughput was beat by the Asus box by a considerable margin. |

 | reply to msmisfit I have a Cisco/Linksys E2000 flashed with Tomato that works great and have turned a couple other people on to it. All are working great.
The wireless range/signal works great. I can go any where in my house, 2 floors, and not miss a beat. The router is in a closet in the basement even! -- The Firefox alternative. »www.mozilla.org/projects/seamonkey/ |

KoRnGtL15Premium join:2007-01-04 Grants Pass, OR | reply to msmisfit I am still rockin my Linksys E4200 v1 router from last year. It has been a fantastic router and very reliable. My previous router was a Linksys WRT54GL v1.1 with Tomato firmware. That combo was also rock solid. But, since moving to Ultra service. I had to upgrade my router last year. |

There is DDWRT firmware for it but I had issues with weird lockups when using so went back to stock. 4 GigE ports, dual band |

You shouldn't have a issue, unless you use one of the slower firmwares. It can't handle Ultra tier though. I found the info on my router, it's Version 6, with 1.01.01 software, apparently a little outdated. I'll check on that.
It's great to see all this information in one place, on routers that Charter users are having good experiences with. Thanks everyone! |

It's great to see all this information in one place, on routers that Charter users are having good experiences with. Thanks everyone! The latest firmware version for the WRT54G v6 is 1.02.8.
I personally use a old computer running pfSense but that wouldn't be considered the easiest solution. |

JimCTProbably Pricing PropanePremium join:2006-01-11 Connecticut kudos:1 | reply to msmisfit Up until a few weeks ago, I was running an Airport Extreme Dual Band Base station (which I currently have for sale in the DSLR for sale forum- shameless plug , but seriously, it was the most stable, best router I've ever owned. I just got a D-Link DIR-655 because it is wall-mountable and has really high stability ratings, and so far (knock on wood!), it's run flawlessly! I'd recommend both at this time... but the D-Link is still too early to really comment on the quality of the unit. |

Da_G join:2001-06-11 Riverside, CA | I've been using a D-Link DIR-825 for about a year now, working great on Ultra100 service. It does about 80MB/s on GbE LAN transfers, too. Can't say i've been terribly impressed with it's range, but I live in Wi-Fi hell with over 80 visible access points from my router's location. (City provided Wi-Fi, every neighbor with an AP, and apartments behind us)
5GHz only penetrates about a room and a half away, and 2.4GHz barely works outside my house. But again my location is a worst-case scenario, so I would say I'm happy with it! I've tried DD-WRT on it in the past and I couldn't seem to ever get it to perform at the level of the stock firmware. But haven't tried in a few months, maybe a newer revision fixed it up. Stock firmware works great, though! |

JimCTProbably Pricing PropanePremium join:2006-01-11 Connecticut kudos:1 | I almost bit for the 825 for the dual band features, but my Roku 2 XD can't use 5ghz and I had read that the 825's range was far shorter than the 655 with less stability. I really didn't need the dual band, but range and stability is much more critical. So far, I'm pretty happy with my choice. I've only used the 2.03NA firmware... seems pretty solid. |
