Re: New Year Survey on best routers ... currently said by JimCT:Up until a few weeks ago, I was running an Airport Extreme Dual Band Base station (which I currently have for sale in the DSLR for sale forum- shameless plug , but seriously, it was the most stable, best router I've ever owned. I just got a D-Link DIR-655 because it is wall-mountable and has really high stability ratings, and so far (knock on wood!), it's run flawlessly! I'd recommend both at this time... but the D-Link is still too early to really comment on the quality of the unit. I had the DIR-655 before the Buffalo one i mentioned, it failed on me. The ports on back stopped working. :/ |

 | reply to msmisfit I use an Apple Airport Extreme and I like it, granted its more simplistic than other but it works well. I had the 3'rd gen for 2 years and just got the 5th, it has Simultaneous dual band as well. Its a bit overpriced though. |

Dual Band and 4 gig-e ports. The WNDR3700 v1 & v2 are based on the Atheros AR7161 rev 2. The WNDR3700 v3 is a Broadcom BCM4718A1.
The WNDR3800 is basically the WNDR3700 with more RAM.
DD-WRT and Open-WRT arent showing v3 as supported If 'custom' firmware matters to you be aware: »www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=660243 »www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Su···#Netgear
I guess what I want to say is the current V3 devices are COMPLETELY different than the V2 devices. So if you liked the WNDR3700v1 or v2 -- I'd order a WNDR3800. |

 | reply to compuguybna I have a V1 of the WNDR3700 and dd-wrt *finally* started working worth a damn sometimes around the August builds. But Brainslayer took out a bunch of things such as SNMP.
OpenWRT performs nicely too.
However, regardless of the firmware, this thing has fairly poor range. But you can't bet the gig-E ports and the fast processor. |

 | reply to msmisfit I give a +1 to the Netgear WNDR4500 it has the best range for 5G. It also performs with Ultra100 I can actually got 100 down and 5 up. |

| reply to msmisfit I've been using the Linksys WRT610N for almost 3 years now. Works great! With ultra 100, I average about 80Mbit down and 5Mbit up on a wired (not wireless) connection. The range seems pretty good to me .. walking outside 75-100 feet from router with iPhone. I haven't tested the speed on iPhone at that distance, but I regularly test iPhone 4's speed at about 15 feet from router and average 15Mbit down and 4Mbit up. |

I had a preference for Linksys, because I had good luck with mine, but I think I am going to switch to the Netgear 3800, unless someone tells me it is NOT easy to configure or install as I have read. It has two features I like, the clear channel switching and a traffic manager [which I know others have].
I really appreciate all the responses here. I liked the Asus, but when I read all the bad reports on their customer service, IF you're unlucky and get one with a problem, and that scared me off. There aren't any routers that don't have user complaints, so you just have to settle on something that has fewer, and features you want. Once again, thanks everyone for your replies. |

 | reply to iFail 5G I have to agree. I just bought the 5th gen AEBS and it seriously has the best range of any router I've owned. That includes a WRT54GL, WNDR3700, and a piece of garbage Belkin. |

Yea, I tried a few routers before getting another AEBS and now I don't have to use a repeater. I am not a huge Apple fan or anything like that, but it works great. It doesn't have a lot of customization options but enough for the majority and just works. |
