Re: [NFL] Wild Card Weekend Discussion

Very happy to see the Giants pound Atlanta. Mike Smith made a huge blunder on the 4th down play down 10-2. Down 8, you still need a field goal to win the game. Why not just get it there?

The new overtime rule is just plain stupid. It's too complex/confusing for the causal fan (who is watching in the playoffs) and I think a case could even be made that it puts more emphasis on the coin toss, not less. I'm not sure that not taking the ball isn't the better option (and unless you have seen a mathematical analysis, no one else knows either). Sure, didn't work out that way yesterday. Someone should run 10,000 OTs in Madden and see what happens.

Now that the kickoff has been moved up, I don't think there's a need for this rule. Look at the OT stats from 1974 through 1996 when the kickoff was from the 35 yard line. I don't know the exact number, but I recall it being close to 50/50. It only skewed to the receiving team when the kickoff was moved back to the 30 in 1994.

The offensives are a bit better now, so it might change things from that era, but I think, giving a team the ball at the 20, makes it pretty even, regardless of who wins the coin toss.

I think the new kickoff rule could have been the fix on it's own.

I LOVE TEBOW!!!! Seriously I do. I listen to a lot of sports radio and watch sports analyst. It's great watching them argue over Tebow, doubt him, criticize him and the he comes out and does his thing. He's great.

Never in a million years did I expect anything like what happened yesterday. Tebow pulled a Roethlisberger on the Steelers. He was elusive in the pocket and made plays running around.

Tebow vs Brady ought to be interesting.

Ravens need to play lights out the rest of the way. No more letdowns.

Everyone is focusing on Tebow. Its the whole team that won not just Tebow.Without that defense no way Tebow would have chance in hell of winning all those games. The defense has kept them close in all those games he won.

Relax dude. Its obviously a team game. His D (and kicker) did win him several of those games. But this past game the kid made plays. Plays I didn't think he was capable of. Props to Demaryus Thomas as well.

Its a team game. You win as a team. Why would I have to relax? Are you bothered by my statement?I'm glad Denver won.Tebow had the best game of his career throwing the ball.He didn't win that game alone.

Answering myself...

The Broncos indeed set a new OT time of possession record with the 11 second pass and TD.

The old record was held by Da Bears, with a 21 second kickoff return for a TD, on 11/27/80.

I read somewhere the old record was held by the Jets and Bills in 2002. Morton of the Jets returned the opening OT kickoff from the 5 yard line for a TD @ 00:14 of OT.

I guess I shall have to root for the Ratbirds now...

Don't you dare!

I have too... imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, and the Ravens are more or less a mirror image of the Stillers.

Plus we have to keep it in the family - the AFC Norris Division family.

And - maybe, just maybe, if they finally get another SB win, that pain-in-the-ass Ray Lewis will finally retire!

Don't worry - I will return to hating them next year when the regular season begins.

Ray definitely retires if a SB win. He probably should regardless, but who am I to say? He's clearly lost at least a step, probably two or three.

And yes, the Ravens have attempted to build themselves to beat the Steelers, right or wrong, so that is flattery. It was considered essential just to be able to have a chance at the next level. You don't lose all those heartbreakers and not become somewhat obsessed with it. Hopefully they haven't taken their eye off the prize that matters most though.

Gotta whip up on them thar Texans!! Really good defensive football team, great running game, great WR and TE, just a somewhat unproven rookie QB. I've been impressed with what I've seen out of that kid though.

Lol...I was just reading over this thread again...sort of reminiscing, if you will. (Man, some of us were really caught up in the moment, eh?).
Always a lot of fun "watching" the game with you guys.
And yeah, I realize this whole thing is ancient history, now that it's Tuesday. But one thing really struck me again:

And Tebow threw for 316 yards with just 10 completions. 10!

That to me is still beyond belief. Haven't bothered trying to look up any past stats, but I wonder how many times a QB has completed only 10 passes in an entire playoff game for 316 yards? Wow

Those 80 yard catch-and-runs really help pad out the 'ol stats, don't they?

Tebow was much more accurate than normal Sunday.
Could it be that now the playoffs have started, the teams with the best defenses will out, and our Superbowl matchup will be Denver/New York Giants? Regular season 8-8 vs. 9-7?
Can there be many people who would consider that the desirable season-ending championship ballgame?
Certainly not me.

San Francisco/Baltimore could be interesting. Denver/New York could be . . interesting.
But the matchups that provide the most potential for an incredibly exciting, back-and-forth, 50-48 kind of game are Green Bay/New England or New Orleans/New England.
And in what's been the year of the offense, one of those two matchups is the game I'd like to see, and probably the game that deserves to be seen.

Yeah, I hear you, AB. And just for the record (although I'm sure you knew anyway), I wasn't saying I was impressed with Tebow at all, but rather...are you kidding me???
As far as who I'd like to see in the big show, hard to say now that my beloved Jets are doing nothing more than making lame TV commercials these days. But yeah, I actually wouldn't mind seeing the Giants win it all, despite their mediocre regular season record.
I doubt it will end up that way, but who knows.
No matter...the thing I'm looking forward to the most, is seeing Madonna in the halftime show.
