| Verizon "Home Phone Connect" Hi- I am looking into this service, and I am wondering if anyone here has tried it, or knows anything about it. If so, what is your opinion about it? I appreciate any thoughts, thank you. |

| Bad idea. If the Verizon Cellular/Mobile network goes down you loose all phone service. I keep a Plain Old Telephone Service(POTS) wire service as an available possible alternative communication path for those times when the cellular system may shutdown due to overload. |

| reply to Dominokat The idea is to save money. Right now, I am paying 30 dollars to Time Warner for phone, and that is a "promotional" price that is about to go to 45 dollars. Getting a "POTS" line will cost about the same, if not a little more. Switching to this as an add a line, is only 9.95 (but eats my minutes) or 19.95 for unlimited.
I have had Verizon Wireless for 10+ years and never had down time here. |

 | reply to Fiosman Why wait a few month???
I have heard that Verizon will/may be releasing a 4G version with internet. Does anyone know if there is any truth to this? |

Wireless has been more reliable for me than my landline Ha. But I agree, not only do you lose the reliability but you also lose E911.
You only have basic location with the home phone connect, and landlines have E911 that immediately shows the physical address. |

Dominokat"Hi"Premium join:2002-08-06 Boothbay, ME kudos:2 | When you buy the unit, don't you have to provide a street address that will be assigned to the unit so if you do call 911, all the information is there. |

 | said by Dominokat:When you buy the unit, don't you have to provide a street address that will be assigned to the unit so if you do call 911, all the information is there. No, its a portable unit and can be moved at any time. Its basically a Telular or a cell phone with an ATA built in.
It has a dual band CDMA2000 chip and the same A-GPS/AFLT system as in any Verizon cell for E911.
The best scenario is during an E911 call is they can locate you to within about 100 meter's, but typically its further off than that and if the PSAP doesn't support PHASE II E911 then all they will get is the tower's physically address and your phone number, and that won't help if you're in an apartment or town home.
Of course they can subpoena your information for the home phone connect line and then Verizon could match it to the address listed on the account, but by that time you are probably not still alive if you aren't able to speak your address in the first place. |

| reply to Dominokat Had the Home Phone Connect, went back to Comcast Digital Voice as I like to have E911 capability if I find myself in the middle of a home invasion or medical emergency. The home phone connect is nothing more than a cell phone with a POTS port on it. If I dial 911 from a landline like Comcast, the dispatcher will see my location (which is especially helpful since I live in a duplex) whereas when I dial 911 on a cell phone, it goes to the State Police dispatch in Northampton and they transfer it to Springfield and I have to give the location of the emergency (which is hard to do if you're having an asthma attack or a burglar has a gun pointed at the occupants) whereas you dial 911 on a fixed line service and it goes straight to the 911 call center for the jurisdiction that responds and they have your exact location. I advise anyone with health problems or that live in high crime areas to keep a landline or reliable VoIP service like one provided by a cable provider (preferably with battery backup on the modem). -- All of my CPE (including my EMTA) is customer owned. The only Comcast owned equipment in my house is the CableCards in the two TiVO boxes I own. |

XCore join:2011-01-02 Irmo, SC | reply to Dominokat I've had it for about 9 months and except for some idiosyncrasies I'm satisfied.
- 911 issue is resolved in your Verizon wireless online account. You can "assign" a physical address which will show when 911 is contacted. If you use the service away from that address you would obviously have a problem.
- Voice mail is a little thing I dislike about it. You can't turn it off so you can use your home unit's VM and you can't set the rings to pickup any higher then the default of 4. Therefore, you have to set your own at 3 rings and I can't get to it that fast usually.
- Mine is on UPS so power outage is no problem and VZW outage has never been an issue for me (knock on wood).
- I've always agreed about the POTS line being a near necessity but it has gotten absolutely absurd with costs. After the basic service and add in all the ridiculous taxes and fees, home service with AT&T here runs about $60 and I'm just not paying that when I can get this for $10.
Good luck! |

jagged join:2003-07-01 Boynton Beach, FL | reply to Dominokat my inlaws have it after being with at&t since 1968. They like it a lot but I find many times the call quality is iffy, even though they brought their device with them when they came to visit us in Florida.
Other than that it beats paying $50/month for at&t like they did |

 | reply to Dominokat Ive tried it but am now dashing to the store to return it. They say on the website that you get Caller ID Name. What that means is that your name is displayed on outgoing calls. For incoming calls, you get to see the number! I've been answering calls that I wish had gone to voice mail! I feel like they lied.... and am back in the dark ages! |
|
 | You can turn off vzw voicemail i did, You just got call them tell them you wainr VM off simple. |
