DoD: Ping problem.

Not sure if this is the best section to post this in, if it is the wrong section I apologize as this is my first time posting here. Onto the problem I am having. I just recently started having a problem with my wireless connection. I should first say that there are 2 computers connected to the network: 1 desktop (plugged directly into the router) and my desktop which is connected through a wireless USB adapter. The computer that is connected to the router has no connection problems at all, connection is fairly smooth and download speeds are somewhat decent. On my desktop however is having some connectivity issues. The problem, which I may have an idea what could be causing it but I am unsure at the moment, that I am having is that suddenly my connection slows down ridiculously. I may be playing a game like Day of Defeat and have a steady ping around 45-100 but then it suddenly jumps in the thousands and stays like that for a good couple of minutes then jumps back down and stays steady. It does this for download speeds too, I will be downloading at my usual speed of 90-200kbps then it suddenly plummets down to 6kbps. The computer upstairs is used by my father but he is not running any torrents, downloading anything or streaming movies, he just checks his e-mail once in a while and for pretty much the entire day the computer is sitting idle doing nothing. I am also not running any torrents or downloading anything while browsing or playing my game and when I am downloading it is always 1 thing at a time and I will just browse the web as to not risk in reducing the download speed by a ton. I used to have a laptop until it broke down and my laptop did not have this problem, however my desktop is. I am using it from the same room as my laptop the only difference is that my desktop is using a USB wireless adapter. Could that be the issue? The adapter is a Linksys AE2500. This is a custom built PC which I just finished about 4 days ago. Every part is brand new and there are no viruses or nothing that could be slowing it down. Running Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and my router is the Vizio XWR100. Any help or info that could be shared to try and help my problem will be appreciated.

How good it is the signal...

You can very well have a virus on any of those PC's or it could be an ISP issue... modem, line quality...

Also what sort if internet is this? Is it DSL or a WISP?

Shut down all other computers that use the Internet except for your new computer. Then connect your pc directly to the modem and try to replicate the issue.

If it doesn't occur, it's the wireless or the other pc's have something like a virus trashing the connection. You could have one without knowing it.

If it does occur, it's likely ISP related or the modem is bad / misconfugured.

It could be the computer has a bad wireless driver or card, but I doubt it. The ISP should be able to tell you if there is a problem in your area or if the modem is bad.

if signal strength is good try changing the channel in the router settings you might be getting interference from somewhere and if you have programs set to auto update try to set them to manual
