[DIRECTV] Kudos to DirecTV re: 3net .. IMAX, Discovery, Sony

A few days ago we got our first 3D HDTV, and channels appeared on our DVR that were in 3D. 3 of the channels are free, 1 is pay.

Of the 3 free channels, one is sports, the others have more variety. A lot of content seems to be IMAX documentary stuff. Though today there was the Rose Bowl Parade in 3D from HGTV (no commercials) and earlier Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs also in 3D.

As it's only 3 channels, and one is sports centric (an ESPN channel I think), the variety of programing can't compete with the other 300 or so viewable channels.

For just 3 channels it's first rate, offering a lot more variety than expected. Most use of the 3D features of our set have come from just these 3 channels.

Some content seems a bit unusual, there are some kids shows / cartoons that only seem to be on 3net.

Anyway, if anyone is considering a 3D TV ... DirecTV at least offers some nice content in early 2012.

Its unfortunate that D* would waste all that bandwidth on something that'll fizzle out in 2 years.

I had reservations about 3D ... but it's better than expected so far. If it fizzles, DirecTV will likely reclaim their bandwidth. For now, it's an interesting experiment.

I can’t wait to see the 3D content DirecTV has. I’ve had my 3DTV for a year now and went through all of the free 3D On Demand content Time Warner offers, I keep up to date on the [very limited] 3D content they show on the 3D Special Events channel. Last year’s NHL Heritage Classic between Montreal and Calgary looked amazing in 3D and was not available on DirecTV. We have ESPN 3D but it is $10/month extra. I’d have no problem paying that, if they had continuous new content. We also have HBO 3D On Demand, which is my favorite. The selection of movies gets updated and rotated on a regular basis help keeping it fresh. I can’t wait to check out 3Net and n3D.

Question about 3D on DirecTV. When you view a 3D channel, does your TV auto detect that there is a 3D signal and automatically switches in 3D mode, or do you have to do something manually? With my 3D blu ray player, the TV automatically detects when I insert a 3D movie and I have to do nothing. With the cable box, I used to have to go into my TV settings and force it into 3D, a few firmware upgrades ago, allows you to press the D button on the remote. That puts the cable box into 3D mode then forces the TV to auto detect.

I'll try and answer most of your questions, but snipped this part as it struck me as most important and I'll answer first (hope you don't mind).

I have an older DirecTV HR21 DVR that supports 3D. When we first fired the TV up, the DVR noted it was 3D and new channels appeared. The first time we tuned into 3net the DVR said we weren't authorized, but still showed 3D signal, after that it was 3D without any message. I suspect somehow DirecTV flags us as 3D users and quickly authorizes 3D content.

The programs were in 3D from the start, the only way to turn 3D off is at the set, DirecTV only displays 3D channels in 3D. When recorded to our DVR, the 3D recordings can not be played on other DVR's to 2D sets. An error message indicating the content requires 3D appears after a few seconds. The program never appears on the 2D sets, it's always black followed by non-3D set text in white against a black background.

I can't use my old 3 in 1 HDMI switch (maybe they make them for 3D, but my old HDMI switch can't handle my DVR or PS3 both of which detect the 3D set and behave differently). When I fired up my PS3, it detected 3D and went into a new on screen menu, asking what size my screen was and provided some new 3D centric options.

There are 2 kids cartoons, specifically for 3D, a lot of college sports on the 3D ESPN channel (this is day in and day out, on weekends and holidays there is some better stuff). An amazing quantity of IMAX content is also provided at no cost.

If it helps, the 3D boxes (DirecTV DVR or Sony PS3) seem to detect the 3D ness of our display and change behavior adapting to it quickly. They then display 3D content without issue.

Hands down 3D is a winner in our home. As soon as we can find prescription 3D sunglasses and don't have to wear flip down glasses, we'll have better overall enjoyment of our set. Flip down glasses have been the easiest, but prescription sunglasses would probably be the ideal solution.

Thanks for the info. Appreciate it. Sounds like it will infact auto detect.
Yes, there are 3D compatible HDMI switches. Monoprice sells a 4 port HDMI switch that supports 3D for like $33 bucks. I’m thinking about getting one. My A/V receiver supports 3D HDMI switching, so I have an HDMI cable run from the TV to the A/V receiver. The A/V receiver then in turn feeds my cable box, Blu Ray Player, Xbox 360 and PS3. This way the TV stays on HDMI 1, and my A/V receiver handles all the switching and processing. Problem is, now with DirecTV, I’ll have 5 HDMI sources, all capable of 3D. I’m thinking about running the cable box, DirecTV receiver and Blu Ray Player direct to the A/V receiver, and then connecting the fourth HDMI input to a switch that feeds the two gaming systems.
