[Need Info] Using my phone as my internet source

I have a Samsung Mythic through AT&T with a grandfathered unlimited data plan and I would like to use it as my 'Modem' but I have been told that is not possible? Can anyone clarify?

Also would it be possible to take my grandfathered contract and apply it to a new phone, such as the Iphone 4S, so I can take advantage of its tethering abilities?

Thanks!

Either way you go you will have to pay for tethering at AT&T.

I was looking at an iPhone, but with my then grandfathered unlimited data plan would not roll over to the iPhone, so I downgraded to a feature phone.

I wasn't using the data plan much and I have put the $30.00 to better use.

DO NOT CALL ATT. DO NOT VISIT ATT. As soon as you get a subsidized phone or even just hint at one, they will change your plan. After they change it, you can't go back no matter how much you complain. You will no longer have the grandfathered unlimited data plan.

Buy an Android, unlocked quad-band GSM, Tri-band UMTS phone.

Remove sim card from old phone.

Insert sim card into new phone.

Turn on the hotspot. Enjoy. In the event ATT blocks the hotspot, log into your ATT account online, manually add the feature, just don't change plans.

So what your telling me is I can buy an Android with no contract or plan and just swap the SIM card do what you said and still have my unlimited data plan?

And what is unlocked quad-band GSM, Tri-band UMTS phone? Is that a feature that comes with the phone when I buy it?

This sounds like a very viable option but I could use a little bit more info. Like set up and how it works and such.

And an Iphone 4S won't work for this?

Also which model Android?

IMHO, android is better. Apple is overpriced. If you go android, make sure it is running 2.3 gingerbread.

I like the Sony Ericsson Xperia neo V White 3G Unlocked GSM Android Phone w/ Android OS 2.3 / Wi-Fi / 3.7" Touchscreen / 5.0 MP Camera $279.99 »www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a···75212185

Or pick from any ATT3G phones. »www.newegg.com/Product/ProductLi···t%26t+3G

AT&T uses 1900/850 frequency bands, but why not future proof?

GSM=voice
UMTS=data

Quad Band GSM Phone
GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz

Quad Band UMTS Phone
UMTS 850 / 900 / 1900 / 2100 MHz

Thanks man. Can i just buy the phone without a contract? So that way I can just slip the SIM card in and I am good to go, or no? How would that work.

Also, so an Iphone would work for this? Theoretically.

Yes. These are no-contract phones. You own them out right.

Yes. The iphone uses a sim card. But why pay all that money for an iphone? Find someone who has an Android phone and try it!
