Re: Dcx3400?

I would love to know if you can get this working...

I'm interested in the Shaw box. Would that one be able to work on Cogeco "out of the box" without any frequency changes and all that stuff?

matty...this looks different than OOB screens' I've seen in the past, so to be honest with you, I don't know what its scanning/looking for...it looks like it is looking for another channel/something...perhaps on the DCT 64xx's the screen looks the same? Sorry I can't help you any further than that.

From my understanding the DCX3400 has a built in docsis 2.0 modem, it might be trying to connect to an internet frequency for the on demand features. Do the DCT-series DVR's use the modem function?

I'm quite confused how I had the clock working at some point where all it does now is just "hunt" for the appropriate frequencies.

xfinisherx - The Shaw Box may be completely different internally from the Comcast one. That Best Buy customer claims to have his 500GB version successfully working on Cogeco. I'll keep you posted if I can ever get this device running as well.

Could doing a factory reset perhaps work? (however you do that lol)

Hopefully someone more knowledgeable can chime in on this conversation to provide some light on the frequency stuff.

Worst comes to worst it goes back on eBay and you lose some money if it doesn't go through as you planned...

I'll post (whenever i get to it) my experience with buying the Shaw DCX3400. (mainly whenever I have time to go and get it, activate it, lie to Cgo's technicians, etc etc.)

I'll stay watching

I gave up on this model after doing a ton of resets to no progress and will now pick up a Pace RNG200N ... I'm still curious as to how that Best Buy customer got his box up and running though

Did you try the Shaw box? I wouldn't be surprised if the Comcast boxes had some sort of Comcast-specific difference.

Nope, although this is a pay week In a worse case I'll get a full refund through Best Buy right?

Exactly. You've got nothing to lose except the time to tinker, but one could argue that the potential benefit if it works would outweigh the potential loss if it doesn't.

Be sure to let us know regardless.

Sorry to hear that you couldn't get the Comcast one working...

Hopefully you'll be able to get rid of it for a decent price and not take a too huge loss on it.

Best of luck with the Shaw box if you do try it. I would get one now, but I'm really busy with a lot of stuff, and I dont really have the time to get one, call Cgo, and all that stuff lol

Well, I suppose this all goes to prove that the price of the PVR box is artificially manipulated by the particular cable co 'authorizing' that box.

I see Rogers does the same thing. $499 for a 150GB HD-PVR - now that's a steal.

If the CRTC wants to find a cause, why not pick this up? Clearly the cable cos are doing this simply to protect their PVR rental income.

I just picked up a Shaw DCX3400 and am trying it out as I have nothing to lose! ... Currently under OOB Status I have an SNR of 22.7 dB - Good and an AGC of 21% - Good and am Hunted at 72.75MHz.

It should be activated on Cogeco's network (they have my info) but the guide is hung up in la la land and I haven't been successful in doing a "cold boot" while holding Menu and reapplying AC Power... *yet*

And to lock people up in short- and long-term commitments. Artificially inflate the units' (be that PVR, cable box, wireless handset) prices to 3 times what they're worth, then discount them back down to cost+margin in exchange for a commitment. People think they're getting a bargain, lock in for 1 - 3 years, then spend thousands on those overpriced services on the overpriced equipment.

It's good times for the telecoms these days - they're lovin it, and the earnings reports prove that out.

This is why I am on a mission to make this unit work on Cogeco! ... Seriously though, the DCX3400 is a sleek looking model and is all digital, pretty much on par with the Pace box.. in terms of hardware it just doesn't make sense that Cogeco wouldn't support it especially with the other Motorola's they support. I much rather spend $179.99 at Best Buy than $499 for a 500GB HD PVR!

With that said... My unit's clock is 5hours ahead (minutes are accurate) and has a "0" in front of it randomly... ie, 2:33 then 02:34 etc etc

Phone support seems to be out of the question as they are far from supportive and am relying on DSLR and a little bit of luck to get pretty HD PVR up and running. (I love you all ehhh )

Matty, did you have to phone in for activation? I've never even tried the "online" thing they have now - so I'm not sure if you simply plug the unit in whether it would show up in the online activation list or not. It seems to me that for a first-time activation, you'd have to call in.

Still following this to see where it goes. We'd like a new and decent PVR, but not at Cogeco's asking prices.

I phoned in to initially place my Unit's Address on Cogeco's network while the online activation process is great to force a reset signal to your devices without the hassle of calling tech support.

Today I was able to perform a cold boot but the box just hangs (after 5hours) with the data transfer icon displayed, not sure if it stalled or I am too impatient? lol

So, are you getting closer to making it work?? :P

Nope, after numerous resets from both Cogeco and myself to no progress I have decided to simply return the unit to Best Buy.

I have a feeling Cogeco is actively blocking DCX3400's or the problem might be caused by lack of firmware. The software (programmable guide) seems to be compatible across all Motorola units along with the Pace models.

It's a shame it won't work but I recently got a Pace RNG200N up and running quite nicely

Oh well... if it was never meant to be......
