[BC] Optik HS Internet - Wifi issues with Actiontec V1000h

I get very solid speeds on my desktop PC, as advertised it approaches the 15 Mbps speed limit even when the HDTV is on and at full flight with all 3 streams going on at once.

However, on my HP DM4-1050ca laptop (which fully supports the Wireless n protocol) as well as my iPod touch 4th gen (ditto), the speeds are less than stellar for a lot of the time. In fact, when I observe the "Wireless Network Connection Status" window -from the Network and Sharing Center - the link speed fluctuates a lot. Sometimes it's 58.5, 52, 39, 26, 19.5 Mbps, others it goes down to 13 or 5.5 Mbps. There's the problem: it constantly seems to fall back to 5.5, and I suspect that it is caused by a poor signal as a by-product of interference, due to other wifi signals in close proximity. This is evidently a result of living in a high density region like DT Van.

In any event, while changing the wireless channel to 9, 10, or 11 temporarily resolves the problem, I still always end up with a poor link speed. What I would like to know is: do other Optik HS customers using Actiontec V1000h experience a similar, if not the same, issue? Also, what are the potential remedies? Eg, firmware update? Separate router for wireless networking?

I'm bumping this thread. The problem is still recurring...

Excuse the telus optik newb poking his nose in -
I thought Optik streams went against your available bandwidth, and therefore if you have 25Mbps like I'm having installed, with all of them on you might expect to get something less like ~12 - 15 Mbps ?

You seem to be saying thats not the case? Thats very interesting if so. Obviously it would have to be 3 "live" streams or recording streams, not recorded previously streams.

I see your point. I am assuming that there would have to be some sort of lag, but generally speaking the streams haven't significantly impacted my connection quality. It just seems like a solid connection that's capped to a certain bandwidth (almost tops out at 15 Mbps, as advertised). The fiber optics connection, even if only partially implemented in my case - which I am unsure of - might have something to do with that.

In any event, while I am satisfied with the desktop set-up, the wireless signal is often anemic and I am wondering if there are ways to improve the reliability with respect to LINK SPEED, because at this point I'm still at a loss for why it's .. inconsistent

OP: you might benefit from purchasing a dual-band N wireless access point (and dual-band capable adapters if your computer is not already equipped with one).

Dual-band will help alleviate performance problems due to interference since it also uses the 5.8GHz band, which is less crowded than the 2.4GHz band (for now anyways).

The Actiontec as far as I know is not dual-band. Unfortunately neither is your iPod touch.

As long as the line quality allows it, the modem actually connects at a speed much greater than 25Mbps. I can't remember exactly what it is but it's greater than 30Mbps.

The internet speed is then limited to either 15 or 25Mbps using QoS, depending which speed you're paying for.

The end result is that the TV doesn't dig in to your internet bandwidth.
