how to open a port for email

Hello,

I recently acquired a Westell 7500. The default firewall setting (at least what my ISP set as default) is low, which only blocks known threats. I'd like to set the firewall at high, but that doesn't let me send email (receive is OK).

I know where the port forwarding page is, but not how to use it. Can someone please walk me through how to open a port?
